Marvel’s mutant reboot has been one of the most closely followed stories in Hollywood this year, with casting announcements heightening anticipation for what lies ahead. Following a surprising box office success and an exciting D23 showcase, one rising star has quickly become a focal point in the conversation.

Inde Navarrette transitioned from a supporting role on a canceled CW series to one of the most buzzed-about newcomers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in just a few months. The 25-year-old actress from Tucson, Arizona, has spent years honing her craft in television, including a stint on ’13 Reasons Why’ and four seasons as Sarah Cushing on ‘Superman & Lois,’ before her career took a dramatic turn thanks to an unexpected horror success.

Now, reports indicate that her Marvel debut may arrive sooner than fans expected. According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, Navarrette is set to portray Rogue in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ potentially offering audiences their first glimpse of the character ahead of her confirmed lead role in Marvel’s upcoming ‘X-Men’ reboot.

That breakout role in ‘Obsession’ proved to be a game changer, raking in nearly $500 million worldwide against a modest budget of just $750,000, which quickly caught Hollywood’s attention. Marvel Studios took notice, and speculation about her joining the MCU began to swirl almost immediately after her name gained traction.

The speculation became official at Disney’s D23 showcase, where Kevin Feige announced Navarrette as part of the newly formed X-Men cast. She joins Adam Driver as Mister Sinister, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and Maya Boyd as Storm in Jake Schreier’s ‘X-Men,’ which is slated to premiere in May 2028 as the first MCU film following ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’

Interestingly, Navarrette’s journey to Rogue wasn’t entirely what she envisioned. She had previously expressed a desire to land the role of Mystique instead of Rogue, and as of now, no actress has been announced for that character, leaving room for further casting announcements in the future.

The commitment required for the role underscores Marvel’s serious investment in her talent. Navarrette reportedly declined a role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and several seven-figure offers to take on the role of Rogue, a decision that effectively secures her involvement with the franchise for years as the X-Men are expected to play a pivotal role in the MCU following ‘Secret Wars.’

Reactions from those familiar with the character have been largely positive. Lenore Zann, who voiced Rogue in animated X-Men projects for three decades, welcomed Navarrette to the role in a video message, expressing excitement about what she will bring to the character and even offering to meet up for coffee when she returns to Los Angeles. However, some fans online have raised questions about whether Navarrette’s rapid ascent from ‘Obsession’ influenced her casting over more seasoned actors.

Regardless of whether the ‘Secret Wars’ report materializes, Navarrette’s trajectory over the past year has been hard to overlook. With an awards campaign reportedly being organized by Focus Features for her performance in ‘Obsession’ and now a prominent role in one of Marvel’s most anticipated franchises, she is poised to be one of the biggest breakout stories in genre film in recent memory.
