Taylor Sheridan Faces Lawsuit Over Alleged ‘Yellowstone’ Idea Theft
Long before ‘Yellowstone’ emerged as a television sensation, its concept reportedly circulated in Hollywood. Many writers have tales of scripts that nearly made it to the screen, only to see someone else’s version succeed, leaving those near misses to linger for years.
For one entertainment journalist and TV writer, this lingering frustration has culminated in a federal lawsuit. Lauren J. Salkin claims she pitched the foundational elements of what became ‘Yellowstone’ nearly ten years ago, well before Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western drama premiered.
According to TMZ, Salkin filed a federal lawsuit in California against Sheridan, Paramount, and NBCUniversal on Friday. She alleges that in 2016 and 2017, she submitted a pilot script and additional materials for a show titled ‘Sovereign Nation’ to Sheridan’s production company. She asserts that her materials were reviewed, as she received a note from Elevate Entertainment stating, “Taylor thanks you very much for your interest. Unfortunately, he’s unavailable for TV projects.”
Salkin’s lawsuit claims that just months after receiving that rejection, Paramount approved Sheridan’s own ranching drama. ‘Yellowstone’ aired its first episode in June 2018, and Salkin argues that the similarities between her original concept and Sheridan’s series are too numerous to be mere coincidence.
The lawsuit reportedly details these alleged parallels extensively. Salkin provides a character-by-character comparison in her filing, asserting that the main cast of characters closely resembles those she originally conceived. She also points to shared plotlines, including a central conflict over land and development, along with an overall tone that she claims mirrors her concept for ‘Sovereign Nation.’

The timing of this lawsuit comes during an already tumultuous period for the ‘Yellowstone’ franchise, which is entangled in various legal disputes. Sheridan has faced his own courtroom challenges, having filed a trademark lawsuit against co-star Cole Hauser’s coffee company in 2023 over branding that Sheridan’s team argued could confuse consumers with his own Bosque Ranch product line. That dispute was quietly resolved a month after it began.
Whether Salkin’s claims will hold up in court remains to be seen, and as of this report, neither Sheridan, Paramount, nor NBCUniversal has publicly responded to the lawsuit. ‘Yellowstone’ has become one of the most lucrative franchises on television, spawning multiple prequels and spin-offs since its debut in 2018, which only heightens the stakes in this legal battle over the origins of its foundational premise.
For now, this case adds yet another complex chapter to the growing list of controversies surrounding the ‘Yellowstone’ universe, both on-screen and off.
