Dave Filoni Shares Wild ‘Star Wars’ Pitches as Lucasfilm President
Dave Filoni is discussing the creative pitches that come in for ‘Star Wars’, revealing that some are so outlandish he can’t even disclose the wildest one.
Having been a significant part of Lucasfilm since 2005, Filoni has collaborated closely with ‘Star Wars’ creator George Lucas. One of his early major contributions was in developing the animation side of the studio, leading to iconic shows like ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’. He has also played a crucial role in expanding ‘Star Wars’ storytelling into television and streaming.
Over the years, Filoni has emerged as one of the key creative figures at Lucasfilm. He partnered with Jon Favreau on ‘The Mandalorian’, successfully revitalizing ‘Star Wars’ in the live-action TV realm. His involvement extends to other significant projects such as ‘Star Wars Rebels’ and the series ‘Ahsoka’.
Currently, Filoni holds a prominent leadership role at Lucasfilm as President and Chief Creative Officer, with Lynwen Brennan as Co-President. Despite his high-ranking position, he remains deeply committed to storytelling and development within the ‘Star Wars’ universe.
In a recent interview, Filoni mentioned how some ideas may initially sound bizarre but can evolve into something meaningful. He referenced an early pitch from ‘The Mandalorian’, stating: “At the time, when Jon [Favreau] came in and pitched a child of Yoda’s species, that might’ve seemed crazy… Crazy is opportunity sometimes.”
This idea eventually became one of the most beloved elements of modern ‘Star Wars’, illustrating how unconventional concepts can succeed if executed well.
Filoni also hinted at one particularly extreme pitch he has encountered, though he declined to provide details. He emphasized that not every idea can be publicly shared while projects are still under discussion at the studio.
His contributions over the years have significantly influenced the trajectory of contemporary ‘Star Wars’ storytelling. Series like ‘The Clone Wars’, ‘Star Wars Rebels’, and ‘The Mandalorian’ have all played vital roles in creating a cohesive universe across various timelines and characters.
Filoni is also currently engaged in the second season of ‘Ahsoka’. Along with Jon Favreau, fans are eagerly anticipating the release of ‘The Mandalorian’ and Grogu, which is set to hit theaters on May 22.
Ultimately, Filoni’s message is clear: in ‘Star Wars’, even the most peculiar ideas can blossom into something significant if the narrative and characters are compelling enough.
