The excitement from Marvel Studios’ recent Comic-Con reveal is still palpable, and fans are buzzing with speculation about the future. The announcement of a new actor stepping into the Black Panther role has sparked discussions about when audiences will get to see him in action.

This revelation focused on David Jonsson, the British actor recognized for his roles in ‘Alien: Romulus’ and ‘The Long Walk.’ He was officially introduced during Marvel’s Hall H panel as the next Black Panther, set to portray T’Challa II, the adult version of the young prince first seen at the end of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ who is the son of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa and Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia.

Recent reports suggest that Jonsson’s character might make his MCU debut much sooner than expected. Industry insider Daniel Richtman has indicated that T’Challa II could appear in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ rather than waiting for ‘Black Panther 3’ for a proper introduction.

If this timeline holds true, Jonsson could be on screen as early as December 2027, ahead of ‘Black Panther 3’s’ scheduled release in December 2028. This strategy would allow Marvel to introduce the character during a major Avengers event before giving him a dedicated film.

This approach makes sense considering the direction of the larger franchise. Kevin Feige has hinted that the MCU’s timeline will undergo significant changes after ‘Secret Wars,’ which many fans view as a potential soft reboot for the franchise.

Bringing in a new hero through a team event before launching them into their own film aligns well with this broader strategy, allowing audiences to meet Jonsson’s T’Challa II without placing the entire burden of that introduction on ‘Black Panther 3.’

The casting process itself was notably unique, with Marvel’s leadership expressing genuine enthusiasm. Feige shared that Ryan Coogler had met with Jonsson months before any formal casting process began, surprising the studio with his confidence in the choice.

Feige recounted that Coogler called him after their meeting, stating he had found his ideal candidate, indicating that the search had not even commenced before Coogler made his decision. This behind-the-scenes narrative adds to the impression that the casting was driven by Coogler’s early recognition of Jonsson’s potential.

Details about ‘Black Panther 3’ remain scarce, although Marvel has confirmed that Denzel Washington will join the cast in an undisclosed role. Given that Toussaint was still a child the last time audiences saw him, some form of time jump or reality-altering event will likely be needed to explain how he matures into T’Challa II.

This is where ‘Secret Wars’ comes back into play, as its comic book origins involve a fractured multiverse being reassembled into a single altered reality. A narrative focused on reshaping existence would provide Marvel with ample storytelling opportunities to age up its newest hero well before his solo film debut.
