Writer David Koepp recently shared insights into the creation of the alien creatures in ‘Disclosure Day’ and the emotional experience he and director Steven Spielberg aimed to evoke in the audience.

In the film, the aliens are depicted in various forms. At times, they resemble Earth animals while hiding, but when they reveal their true selves, they embody the classic alien archetype. Characterized by large heads, black eyes, gray skin, thin long fingers, and humanoid bodies, these extraterrestrials vary in size, with some appearing small and others significantly larger, particularly in later footage.

Koepp emphasized that their intention was not to reinvent the alien image but to draw from existing cultural perceptions. He noted that both he and Spielberg wanted to honor established lore and societal expectations regarding extraterrestrials. He stated, “I think that that was important to both Steven and I. Steven first said, ‘I want to respect the lore that’s out there. There’s a cultural memory of how things are and what might have happened. And I don’t want to fly in the face of that.’”

Furthermore, Koepp clarified that the film does not aim to debunk audience beliefs but rather supports the notion that common ideas about aliens might hold truth within the narrative. He remarked, “We’re not making a movie that says everything you always thought is wrong. We’re making a movie that says everything you always thought is right and here’s abundant proof of it.” He added that the film is designed to feel like a confirmation of long-held beliefs about alien encounters.

Due to this approach, the film does not delve deeply into the origins of the aliens or the workings of their technology. While their advanced abilities, such as telepathy and invisibility, are showcased, they are not extensively explained. The narrative also avoids providing a comprehensive rationale for the aliens’ presence on Earth, maintaining a focus on mystery and human reactions.

The plot of ‘Disclosure Day’ follows characters like Margaret Fairchild and Daniel Kellner, portrayed by Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor, as they confront memories of past alien encounters. The release of classified footage and the public acknowledgment of alien life play crucial roles in the narrative. Other significant characters include Noah Scanlon, played by Colin Firth, and Hugo Wakefield, portrayed by Colman Domingo, who help navigate the global response to this revelation.

The film also features a broader supporting cast, including Eve Hewson, Wyatt Russell, Elizabeth Marvel, and Henry Lloyd-Hughes. Their roles contribute to the human aspect of the story, which is a primary focus alongside the alien mystery.

The film has garnered generally positive reactions, holding a strong rating on review platforms, with critics praising its tone and emotional depth. The narrative transcends mere alien encounters, exploring human reactions to world-altering truths.

Box office performance has exceeded expectations, with the film performing well during its opening weekend. Despite this success, Koepp indicated that a sequel is unlikely, as the ending is crafted to feel complete yet slightly open, without setting the stage for a larger franchise.
