DC Studios is set to broaden its animated universe with three exciting new series, including an animated adaptation of the acclaimed comic series ‘Absolute Batman’, a Joker anime, and a Krypto-focused kids show.

These projects were announced during the DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation showcase at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where executives provided insights into the future of DC animation.

For many fans, the highlight was the upcoming ‘Absolute Batman’ animated series. Based on the popular comic by writer Scott Snyder and artist Nick Dragotta, this series will present a unique version of the Dark Knight. Snyder will take on the roles of executive producer and showrunner, while Dragotta will serve as a producer. The comic has already achieved significant success, selling over six million copies and becoming one of DC’s best-selling titles.

The animated series will retain the essence of the comic, depicting Batman as a hero stripped of the usual advantages of wealth and privilege. This narrative will present a more grounded and struggling Batman who battles against corruption and formidable foes. Warner Bros. describes this version of the character as one that examines what remains when the mansion, money, and resources are removed, leaving only the hero.

Additionally, DC Studios announced ‘Joker: Laugh Riot’, marking the company’s first official anime series. Directed by Yasuhiro Aoki and animated by SOLA Entertainment, this project will cater to adult audiences, delving into a darker narrative centered around Gotham’s infamous villain.

According to Warner Bros. Animation’s official description, the series kicks off after Batman’s demise. The Joker embarks on a perilous journey through Gotham’s criminal underbelly to uncover the identity of his nemesis. The story will explore how this quest for vengeance transforms him, pushing him toward an unexpected evolution.

The third project is an untitled Krypto animated series, focusing on Superman’s beloved super-powered dog. This show will adopt a lighter tone, targeting younger viewers while blending comedy, adventure, and superhero action.

The narrative will follow Krypto as he interacts with a group of unlikely criminals living nearby. Warner Bros. Animation explained that this group will come to realize that Krypto is more than just an adorable pet; he is a powerful and chaotic force that could change their lives. “Krypto’s pure nature slowly ends up redeeming them, whether they want it or not,” the studio noted in its series description.

These announcements highlight DC Studios’ increasing emphasis on animation as a crucial aspect of its future endeavors. In addition to these new series, the company continues to develop projects like ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’, ‘My Adventures with Superman’, ‘Mister Miracle’, and other animated titles.

With ‘Absolute Batman’ offering a fresh perspective on the Dark Knight, ‘Joker: Laugh Riot’ probing the psyche of the Clown Prince of Crime, and Krypto presenting a more whimsical superhero adventure, DC is gearing up for a diverse array of animated projects catering to various audiences. Fans can look forward to numerous new ways to engage with the DC universe in the coming years.
