DC’s ‘Dynamic Duo’ Reveals Its Wild Origin Story with Batman and the Red Hood Gang
Few animated projects have sparked as much curiosity as ‘Dynamic Duo,’ the upcoming puppet-animated film from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation.
Since its announcement in late 2024, the film has intrigued audiences not only for its unique format but also for its promise of a fresh perspective on Gotham’s iconic sidekicks. The Annecy International Animation Film Festival has now unveiled substantial plot details, revealing a darker and more grounded narrative than expected.
Utilizing a technology known as Momo Animation, which blends stop-motion puppetry, CGI animation, and live-action real-time performance, the film is described as visually stunning and dynamically expressive. Swaybox, the studio behind this project based in New Orleans, is set to make its feature film debut. Fans got a glimpse of what Gotham City looks like in puppet form during the Annecy festival, marking a significant moment for the film.
The newly revealed plot details reshape the narrative, offering both characters a genuinely fresh angle. ‘Dynamic Duo’ follows Jason Todd and Dick Grayson as street rats who initially adopt the moniker of the Dynamic Duo. Their bond eventually fractures as their paths diverge, with Dick joining Batman and Jason aligning with the Red Hood gang. This street-level origin story roots both characters in survival and circumstance before they don their costumes.
This new framing adds significant weight to an already emotionally charged premise. The film will explore how the friendship between Grayson and Todd is tested by their differing visions for the future. Knowing their eventual fates—one becoming the hopeful Nightwing and the other a morally complex antihero as the Red Hood—makes their friendship’s unraveling all the more compelling. The connection to the Red Hood gang cleverly seeds Jason’s eventual identity through the very environment that shaped him as a child.
The creative team behind ‘Dynamic Duo’ has been enthusiastic from the outset. Comic artist Jock, involved in visual development, expressed his amazement after visiting Swaybox studios in New Orleans, describing the experience of applying their technique to Gotham as breathtaking and genuinely exciting.
Producer Matt Reeves has also been vocal about his passion for the project. He mentioned his long-standing desire to collaborate with Arthur Mintz and Swaybox, and that creating ‘Dynamic Duo,’ a unique Batman and Robin story for families, was a dream come true.
Originally announced by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, who expressed his excitement, he described it as the story of Robin—specifically, Robins, in reference to both Dick Grayson and Jason Todd—and praised screenwriter Matt Aldrich for his talent. Aldrich’s previous work includes the screenplay for Pixar’s ‘Coco,’ hinting at the emotional depth the film aims to achieve.
Although ‘Dynamic Duo’ is a DC Studios Batman project, it falls under the Elseworlds banner, indicating it is not part of the main DCU continuity. The film is slated for theatrical release in the United States on June 30, 2028, marking it as the first Warner Bros. Pictures Animation film to debut in June and the first to feature co-production with DC Studios, Swaybox, and 6th and Idaho.
The reveal at Annecy comes at a time when DC is clearly embracing animation as a serious storytelling medium rather than merely a promotional tool. The festival also showcased the world premiere of ‘Batman: Knightfall Part 1,’ highlighting the studio’s commitment to its animated slate. For a project as unconventional as ‘Dynamic Duo,’ sharing concrete story details is a significant step, suggesting the filmmakers are taking bold creative risks.
