Denise Richards and Casper Van Dien Reunite on Screen in ‘No Free Lunch’
Nostalgia for ’90s cult classics has become a significant factor in Hollywood casting, with studios and independent producers embracing reunions that aim to rekindle the chemistry audiences adored decades ago. Few pairings generate as much goodwill as two stars whose careers were launched by the same iconic sci-fi war film.
That film is Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 cult classic ‘Starship Troopers,’ which catapulted Denise Richards and Casper Van Dien into the spotlight alongside co-stars Dina Meyer, Jake Busey, and Neil Patrick Harris. Although Richards and Van Dien have met at fan conventions and cast reunions over the years, their on-screen collaboration has remained dormant until now.
That dry spell is officially over. Denise Richards and Casper Van Dien are reuniting on screen for the first time since ‘Starship Troopers,’ having recently completed filming in Hamilton, Ontario for the thriller ‘No Free Lunch,’ as reported by Deadline.
This film is the third project from Horizon Line and March On Productions, joining previously announced titles ‘Silent Nightfall,’ featuring Stana Katic, Elisha Cuthbert, and Talia Asseraf, and ‘Greatest Actress,’ starring Mena Suvari and C. Thomas Howell. In ‘No Free Lunch,’ Richards and Van Dien portray detectives and FBI agents racing against time to resolve a harrowing kidnapping case.
According to the official synopsis, ‘No Free Lunch’ follows a mother and daughter, played by Arcadia Kendal and Lara Daans, who fight for their lives after a college drop-off turns into a nightmare. They are abducted by a deranged former surgeon, portrayed by Sebastian Pigott, who is determined to fulfill a promise to his late mother and subjects the two women to a series of sadistic games as he plots to marry one of them before Richards and Van Dien’s characters can catch up to him.
The supporting cast also includes Annie Malee, contributing to an ensemble designed to elevate the film’s thriller premise through its escalating tension. Damian Lee directs the project from a script he co-wrote with Larissa Laskin, with Bennet De Brabandere of Horizon Line producing and Richard Salvatore of March On serving as executive producer.
Maurizio Guarini is composing the film’s score, while Raf Strupinski handled cinematography during production. Roman Kopelevich of Red Sea Media is managing international distribution and is expected to engage with buyers at the TIFF market, while Quiver Distribution is overseeing the film’s domestic sales.
‘No Free Lunch’ is currently set for release in spring of 2027, giving fans of the original ‘Starship Troopers’ ample time to anticipate seeing Richards and Van Dien share the screen again after nearly three decades apart. Given the enduring affection for their original film, this reunion comes with a built-in audience eager to see how their dynamic has evolved since their sci-fi days together.
