Mark Ruffalo has dedicated over a decade to portraying Bruce Banner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, yet a true solo film for the character remains one of the franchise’s biggest unanswered questions. Fans have enjoyed his scene-stealing performances in ensemble films, all the while hoping for a chance to see him take center stage.

This question has resurfaced now that Ruffalo is back in the role for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, marking his first appearance as Hulk since 2022’s ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ and his first feature film role since 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’. His return in Destin Daniel Cretton’s film has sparked renewed discussions about the character’s future.

The speculation intensified when Cretton, the film’s director, directly addressed the topic. He revealed that Ruffalo has been actively developing ideas for a potential standalone Hulk project, indicating that the actor remains invested in the concept despite the uncertainty surrounding the character’s cinematic path.

This persistence aligns with Ruffalo’s previous comments on the matter. He has mentioned the idea of a solo Hulk film in interviews for years, expressing interest in exploring the gaps between Bruce Banner’s various transformations, a part of the character’s history that hasn’t been fully addressed in any MCU project.

Ruffalo’s views on the subject have evolved significantly. In 2017, he told Variety at Disney’s D23 Expo that a standalone Hulk movie would never happen due to rights issues with Universal Pictures, which has retained certain Hulk film rights since the character’s earlier films.

However, by 2020, Ruffalo had softened his stance, telling Variety that he found the idea of exploring the character’s untold history “interesting” and worth considering if the opportunity arose. He has continued to revisit this concept in interviews, even while recognizing the financial challenges of bringing a CGI-heavy character like Hulk to the big screen.

His role in ‘Brand New Day’ marks a significant return to the spotlight, regardless of whether a solo film comes to fruition. Cretton has described the scenes featuring Ruffalo and Tom Holland as compelling, noting that their on-screen chemistry produced something explosive and surprisingly intimate.

This dynamic plays into one of the film’s most anticipated moments, a live-action showdown between Spider-Man and Hulk, inspired by the pages of Marvel Comics. Both Cretton and Holland have commented on how naturally this confrontation developed during filming, framing it as a long-awaited adaptation of a beloved comic book pairing.

Whether this momentum leads to Ruffalo finally landing his own Hulk-focused project remains uncertain, especially given the character’s complicated film rights situation. Nevertheless, Cretton’s public discussion of Ruffalo’s pitches indicates that the idea is still alive internally.

For now, fans can look forward to seeing Ruffalo’s Hulk back in action in an ensemble setting when ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ hits theaters.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is set to premiere in theaters on July 31.
