Marvel fans are no strangers to waiting for updates on their favorite unfinished stories. With shifting release schedules and directors managing multiple projects, some of the studio’s most anticipated sequels have lingered in limbo for years, often without any news.

This has certainly been true for one of the studio’s most cherished Phase 4 heroes, whose future has seemed increasingly uncertain as his solo follow-up remains unannounced. With his director occupied with other major franchise entries, fans had mostly come to terms with a lengthy wait for any significant developments.

However, that wait may finally be coming to an end, as director Destin Daniel Cretton provided his most promising update yet on the future of ‘Shang-Chi 2.’ In an interview with Rolling Stone while promoting ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day,’ Cretton expressed his enthusiasm for the sequel, revealing that he recently discussed it with the franchise’s original writer.

Cretton mentioned that he had been in talks with Dave Callaham, his co-writer on ‘Shang-Chi,’ about the sequel just a few weeks ago, adding that he is hopeful for it to progress. This kind of specific, recent conversation indicates that the project may be receiving genuine attention behind the scenes rather than simply gathering dust.

The timing of this update is particularly noteworthy given Cretton’s current commitments. He initially signed on to direct ‘Avengers The Kang Dynasty,’ but Marvel’s broader multiverse plans shifted, leading him to direct ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’ instead, which left ‘Shang-Chi’ sidelined.

This shift also meant that star Simu Liu spent years without a clear path back into the franchise, even though ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ became one of Phase 4’s most acclaimed films. Liu is finally set to make his return to the MCU in ‘Avengers Doomsday,’ providing fans with their first look at the character in years.

Cretton’s comments also highlighted why the character holds personal significance for him. He shared that Shang-Chi’s journey and feelings of being an outsider resonate with him both culturally and emotionally, linking his eagerness for a sequel to more than just franchise logistics.

Callaham’s ongoing involvement adds another layer of confidence to this update. Beyond co-writing the original film with Cretton and Andrew Lanham, Callaham has been instrumental in shaping Shang-Chi’s narrative since the character’s introduction to the MCU, making his discussions with Cretton particularly significant.

While this does not equate to an official greenlight just yet, and Marvel has remained silent on any formal plans for a sequel, hearing a busy director like Cretton actively advocating for the project, alongside the original screenwriter, is one of the strongest signals fans have received in quite some time.

With Liu’s return confirmed for ‘Avengers Doomsday,’ the potential for Shang-Chi’s story to continue beyond his team-up appearance remains wide open. Whether this continuation manifests as a proper sequel now feels less like a question of interest and more about when Marvel will decide to make it official.

For a character whose future once seemed trapped in franchise limbo, this update provides the kind of hope fans have eagerly awaited. Do you believe Marvel will finally greenlight ‘Shang-Chi 2’? Share your thoughts in the comments.
