Did Minions Work for Hitler? ‘Minions & Monsters’ Revisits a Bizarre Theory
The Minions are beloved for their goofy antics and loyalty to powerful villains. However, a peculiar fan theory has resurfaced following the release of ‘Minions & Monsters’, prompting a fascinating question: Could some Minions have served Adolf Hitler during World War II?
This theory has circulated among fans for years, stemming from the Minions’ history of serving notorious figures. Prior to joining Gru in the ‘Despicable Me’ series, these creatures were depicted assisting various historical villains, including both fictional characters like Dracula and real-life figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte.
This background has led fans to speculate about the Minions’ activities between 1939 and 1945. Given their penchant for seeking out the “biggest, baddest” leaders, many viewers have pondered whether some Minions could have found themselves in service to Hitler during the war.
The 2015 film ‘Minions’ attempted to sidestep this topic by suggesting that the main group of Minions retreated into a cave after causing chaos for their previous masters. They remained hidden from 1812 until 1968, indicating that the Minions featured in the movie were absent during World War II.
However, ‘Minions & Monsters’ shifts the narrative by introducing the concept of multiple Minion tribes existing worldwide. This revelation raises new questions about the activities of other Minion groups throughout history.
Director Pierre Coffin, who has been involved in several Minions films and lends his voice to the characters, was asked about this controversial fan theory by Polygon. He anticipated the question would arise.
“I knew you were going to ask me that question. Shame on you,” Coffin quipped.
When pressed about the possibility of Minions serving Hitler, Coffin initially dodged a direct response. “I think they were in that cave,” he remarked, referencing the original group of Minions from the 2015 film.
However, when it was pointed out that ‘Minions & Monsters’ introduces different tribes, Coffin conceded that the situation is more complex. “I was trying to avoid the answer,” he admitted.

Coffin clarified that the Minions audiences are familiar with were not linked to Hitler or World War II. “So the Minions that we know from ‘Minions 1’ were stuck in the cave. These ones, I don’t know where they were, but they were not part of the Big History,” he explained.
While Coffin’s remarks do not confirm that any Minions worked for Hitler, they leave room for future stories to delve into other Minion groups and their peculiar adventures throughout history.
‘Minions & Monsters’ broadens the franchise by revealing that the yellow creatures are not merely one collective following the same path. The film introduces new character possibilities, including Minions who are uninterested in villainy.
The narrative follows James, an artistic Minion who dreams of making movies rather than engaging in evil deeds. His journey suggests that not all Minions share the same ambitions, adding layers to their mysterious past.
For now, the theory regarding Hitler remains one of the most peculiar unanswered questions in the Minions universe. However, with the franchise now exploring various Minion groups, fans may soon discover more about what these characters were truly up to throughout history.
