The initial reactions to Steven Spielberg’s latest sci-fi venture, ‘Disclosure Day’, have arrived, and the feedback is overwhelmingly positive.

Critics and journalists who attended early screenings are already hailing the film as one of Spielberg’s strongest works in years. Early social media responses indicate that the movie blends mystery, emotion, suspense, and classic sci-fi elements in a refreshing manner while retaining Spielberg’s signature style.

Starring Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor, ‘Disclosure Day’ revolves around themes of alien life, government secrets, and the potential ramifications of humanity discovering we are not alone in the universe.

Collider editor Steven Weintraub praised the film, particularly highlighting Emily Blunt’s performance. He stated, “In a shock to absolutely no one, Steven Spielberg has delivered another towering home run with ‘Disclosure Day’.” He also advised audiences to steer clear of trailers and spoilers before viewing the film.

Slashfilm critic Bill Bria described the movie as a unique entry in Spielberg’s filmography, saying, “’Disclosure Day’ is the weirdest movie Spielberg’s ever made (complimentary).” He commended the screenplay by David Koepp and referred to John Williams’ musical score as his best work in years.

IndieWire’s Jim Hemphill likened the film to some of Spielberg’s most iconic classics, writing, “’Disclosure Day’ is top tier Spielberg, as exhilarating as ‘Raiders’ but with the emotional depth and increased ambition of his post-9/11 work.”

Gizmodo critic Germain Lussier declared the film to be Spielberg’s best in two decades, stating, “It’s Spielberg’s best film in 20 years, filled with all the magic that makes his films so special.” He also praised Emily Blunt’s performance, calling it unforgettable.

Freelance critic Tessa Smith also expressed a deeply emotional reaction after viewing the film, stating, “’Disclosure Day’ is ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! Truly something special.” Smith noted that the movie’s mystery and emotional conclusion lingered with her long after the screening.

This film marks Spielberg’s first feature since ‘The Fabelmans’, released in 2022. Alongside Blunt and O’Connor, the cast includes Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Wyatt Russell.

‘Disclosure Day’ was directed by Spielberg from a screenplay by David Koepp, based on an idea conceived by Spielberg himself. Reports about the project first surfaced in 2024, revealing Spielberg’s development of a new UFO-themed film.

Fans have begun to draw parallels between ‘Disclosure Day’ and Spielberg’s classic 1977 sci-fi film ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’. During an interview with Empire magazine, Emily Blunt suggested there may be connections between the two narratives, stating, “There are definitely questions posed by ‘Close Encounters’ that are answered in ‘Disclosure Day’.”

Spielberg has also openly discussed his fascination with extraterrestrial life while promoting the film. During an appearance at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival earlier this year, he remarked, “I don’t know any more than any of you do, but I have a very strong suspicion that we are not alone here on Earth right now — and I made a movie about that.”

The plot of ‘Disclosure Day’ follows a whistleblower attempting to unveil a hidden conspiracy related to alien contact before a pivotal event alters human history forever.

Universal Pictures is set to release ‘Disclosure Day’ in theaters across the United States on June 12.
