‘Disclosure Day’ Outperforms Projections as Steven Spielberg’s Original Hit
Steven Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day’ hit theaters on June 12, and early box office results are already exceeding industry expectations. Box office analyst Luiz Fernando shared on X that the film earned an impressive $6.5 million during Thursday night previews, significantly surpassing the previously estimated $30 to $35 million for its opening weekend.
The Universal film features Josh O’Connor as a cybersecurity expert who uncovers evidence of alien existence, with Emily Blunt portraying a meteorologist linked to the extraterrestrials. The screenplay was penned by David Koepp, with long-time Spielberg collaborator Janusz Kaminski handling cinematography and John Williams composing the score, marking a reunion of the director’s most trusted creative team.
Described as a unique take on Spielbergian science fiction, many critics liken it to the paranoid thrillers of the 1970s, such as ‘The Parallax View’. The narrative centers on two individuals whose shared childhood experience reveals a decades-long cover-up involving alien life concealed by a powerful organization exploiting extraterrestrial technology.
With a reported production budget of $115 million and around $80 million in marketing, the film’s global breakeven point is estimated at approximately $300 million. Initially considered a risky venture for a non-franchise original, the strong preview performance is prompting analysts to adjust their forecasts upwards. Luiz Fernando now anticipates a domestic opening weekend of $50 to $60 million if the film maintains its momentum.
Currently, the film boasts an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes and features a supporting cast that includes Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, and Eve Hewson. Spielberg has actively promoted the film, attending events like CinemaCon and SXSW, participating in podcast appearances, and even visiting TikTok headquarters with creator Reece Feldman to connect with younger audiences.

The film’s first full day globally yielded around $12 million, with approximately $6 million from domestic previews and another $6 million from early international markets. In the UK and Ireland, ‘Disclosure Day’ captured a 36% market share at number one during its opening wave on Wednesday.
Emily Blunt has openly expressed how significant this project is to her. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she referred to Spielberg as someone who “has become like my movie dad,” sharing that working with him was “the privilege of privileges” and that she was so moved she cried in her car after he offered her the role.
With overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and strong audience word of mouth expected to play a crucial role in its long-term success, ‘Disclosure Day’ is poised to be the kind of adult-focused original film that Hollywood has been hoping would resonate with viewers again. If this weekend’s performance aligns with preview expectations, Spielberg may have once again demonstrated the power of a master filmmaker without relying on sequels or superheroes.
