Disney’s live-action ‘Moana’ is set to debut in U.S. theaters on July 10. According to the Box Office report, the film is anticipated to enter a bustling summer season. It will be released alongside several other major films, including Universal’s ‘Minions & Monsters’ in its second weekend and Disney’s own ‘Toy Story 5’ in its fourth weekend. While ‘Moana’ won’t have the box office to itself, it still enjoys robust support leading up to its release.

The report indicates that ‘Moana’ will receive a full IMAX and premium large format rollout during its opening weekend, which is crucial for boosting ticket sales for big studio films. Current projections suggest the movie could earn between $80 million and $105 million during its domestic opening weekend.

Just one week after ‘Moana’ hits theaters, Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ is expected to release, which could quickly shift audience focus. Therefore, ‘Moana’ will need to perform strongly right from the start.

A significant aspect of the film’s appeal lies in its music and the return of beloved characters. Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as Maui, a character he originally voiced in the animated version. The report suggests this could attract fans familiar with the character. Additionally, the soundtrack is expected to be a major draw, potentially leading to sing-along experiences in theaters.

Shawn Robbins notes that while the animated sequel released in 2024 received mixed reviews, the ‘Moana’ brand retains strong recognition. He compares it to other Disney live-action remakes like ‘The Lion King’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘Aladdin’, and ‘The Little Mermaid’, all of which built substantial audiences from their enduring popularity. In his view, ‘Moana’ still has enough fan support to perform well despite the recent sequel.

The report also highlights that online reactions to trailers have been mixed. However, it argues that the core audience for this film is not primarily online. Instead, it is expected to draw families, particularly parents and young children. Many of these viewers may not have seen the original ‘Moana’ in theaters, potentially bringing in a new generation of fans.

Shawn Robbins articulates this in the report, stating, “Moana’s popularity likely remains sturdy enough for this live-action remake to stand on its own.” He also emphasizes that family audiences have been crucial for similar Disney remakes in the past, and this trend could continue with ‘Moana’.

Directed by Thomas Kail in his feature film debut, the film is penned by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, with Dwayne Johnson serving as a producer alongside Hiram and Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Filming took place in Atlanta and Hawaii from July to November 2024.

The story follows Moana as she embarks on her first journey beyond the island of Motunui, called by the ocean. She teams up with Maui to restore balance to her world. The cast features Catherine Laga’aia as Moana, Dwayne Johnson as Maui, and other supporting actors reprising key roles from the original tale.

Overall, the report suggests that Disney is positioning ‘Moana’ as one of its major summer releases, with strong potential despite facing tough competition and shifting audience interest later in the month.
