Disney’s long-awaited live-action reimagining of one of its most cherished modern classics is officially in its final phase. In this adaptation of the Oscar-nominated animated adventure, ‘Moana’ answers the ocean’s call and embarks on a journey beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the demigod Maui, aiming to restore prosperity to her people. This is a story that audiences have already embraced, and now the studio is confident they are ready to relive it.

The film features Dwayne Johnson, Catherine Laga’aia, John Tui, and Frankie Adams, and has received a PG rating for action, peril, some scary images, rude humor, and brief thematic elements. Directed by Emmy and Tony Award winner Thomas Kail, it is produced by Dwayne Johnson, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The team behind the film carries significant experience, with Kail having previously directed the acclaimed filmed stage production of ‘Hamilton.’

On June 10, the @DisneyStudios account announced that tickets for ‘Moana’ are now available, along with the release of the final trailer. The film is set to premiere exclusively in theaters on July 10. This extended production timeline allowed the studio to refine the visual effects and respect the rich source material. The release coincides with the tenth anniversary of the original animated feature, adding sentimental significance to its theatrical debut.

At the core of the film is an exciting piece of casting history. Catherine Laga’aia, who was announced for the title role, expressed that ‘Moana’ is one of her favorite characters and highlighted the importance of the role to her Pacific Islander heritage, noting her Samoan roots from both her grandfather and grandmother.

Original voice actress Auli’i Cravalho, who stepped aside to allow another young Pacific Islander woman to take on the role, serves as an executive producer. She shared with Entertainment Tonight her excitement for audiences to witness this passing of the baton.

The journey to opening night has faced challenges. An earlier trailer received significant backlash on YouTube, with dislikes reaching 85,000 compared to 37,000 likes, as many fans questioned the necessity of a remake so soon after ‘Moana 2.’

Criticism particularly focused on the visual representation of Johnson’s Maui, with some viewers comparing it to AI-generated imagery and expressing concerns about his line delivery. Nevertheless, skepticism has rarely hindered Disney’s live-action endeavors, and the broader context suggests a compelling counter-narrative.

With ‘Moana 2’ achieving a massive opening weekend and a global box office exceeding one billion dollars, expectations and curiosity for the live-action version remain high, despite mixed reactions to earlier footage. Disney has stressed its commitment to ongoing consultation with Pacific Islander communities throughout production, and the combination of practical ocean filming with advanced visual effects promises a cinematic experience that the animated version could not offer.

Whether the final trailer will change the narrative and win over skeptical fans is yet to be determined, but the ocean has officially called, and tickets are now available. Do you believe this live-action ‘Moana’ can win over the skeptics, or has the internet already made its decision before the film even hits theaters?
