Doctor Who will soon celebrate the 20th anniversary of its revival with a special documentary. Showrunner Russell T Davies confirmed that an hour-long episode of Doctor Who Unleashed, the series’ behind-the-scenes show, will focus on the making of the show’s return.

It will air on BBC iPlayer in the UK and on Doctor Who‘s YouTube channel worldwide in the coming months.

The documentary was delayed and didn’t air around the anniversary of the landmark episode “Rose,” which brought the show back after almost 20 years. Davies explained, “To be honest, [the anniversary wasn’t on my mind]. I’m very much aware how on Disney+ worldwide, going to some territories that have never had Doctor Who before. There are some people watching this to who Ncuti is the Doctor—the number one, their Doctor, and so you’ve got to bear that in mind.

He also admitted that his initial plan was not to celebrate the anniversary at all. “I actually thought it’d be a bit backward, be a bit heavy-handed to [acknowledge]… and now we’re here and I’m kind of slightly kicking myself, because everyone seems to be full of joy about it!” Davies said. This positive response made him change his mind, leading to the creation of the documentary.

The new season of Doctor Who will begin on April 12, airing on the BBC and BBC iPlayer in the UK and worldwide on Disney+.
