Dolly Parton’s Hollywood Walk of Fame Star Vandalized One Week After Her Death
Grief often transforms public spaces into makeshift memorials, and this has been evident along Hollywood Boulevard in the past week. Since the announcement of Dolly Parton’s passing, fans have flocked to a specific sidewalk marker, leaving flowers, cards, and heartfelt tributes to the country legend, who was honored with her star back in 1984.
This outpouring of affection made the subsequent events even more shocking for those who came to pay their respects. Parton, who was 80, succumbed to cancer on August 25 during a brief hospitalization in Nashville. Her death elicited tributes from various personalities, including actor Jane Fonda and her goddaughter, Miley Cyrus, who expressed her heartbreak on Instagram for the world and everyone who will miss Parton dearly.
Now, just one week following her death, Dolly Parton’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has been vandalized. Her name was scratched off the marker, and the surrounding flowers were reportedly stolen. Repairs on the damaged star are already in progress.
Ana Martinez from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce noted that the star had already been cracked and was scheduled for repair work through the Hollywood Historic Trust, which oversees the sidewalk markers. The area was reportedly cleared for this scheduled maintenance when the vandalism occurred.
A fan named Lore Corona shared a video on social media capturing the damage. She explained that she and her daughters had come to leave flowers only to find the star already defaced. According to her, a custodian on-site mentioned that a woman had kicked around candles left at the memorial and then used the shards to scratch Parton’s name, while a man later came by to steal the remaining flowers.
Footage from the scene revealed extensive scratch marks across the star, rendering Parton’s name mostly illegible before crews arrived to commence repairs. No suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the vandalism at this time.
Instead of merely patching the damage, the Hollywood Historic Trust confirmed it will replace Parton’s star entirely. The organization expressed pride in honoring her legacy with a full replacement rather than a partial repair. The new star is expected to be available for public viewing later this week.
This timing adds a painful layer to an already challenging week for Parton’s fanbase, who witnessed tributes pouring in from across the entertainment industry following her death. This included a flag-lowering order at federal buildings and a performance of her song “9 to 5” during the Changing of the Guard ceremony in London. Her illustrious career featured an honorary Academy Award, eleven Grammy Awards, and her 2022 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Vandalism targeting Walk of Fame stars is not a new occurrence, with other celebrities’ markers having been defaced under different circumstances in the past. However, what makes this incident particularly painful for fans is the timing, as it strikes at the memorial of a beloved figure while mourners were still actively gathering to honor her.
