‘The Odyssey’ has quickly become one of the year’s most significant theatrical events, largely due to Christopher Nolan’s commitment to filming the entire movie with IMAX cameras and the limited availability of theaters equipped to show true 70mm prints. This scarcity has made obtaining a ticket to this format feel like a unique accomplishment, prompting fans to travel across state lines just to experience the film as Nolan envisioned.

Warner Bros. and Legendary have recognized this momentum and are leveraging it ahead of one of the year’s most anticipated releases. ‘Dune Part Three’, Denis Villeneuve’s concluding chapter in his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s saga, has been generating excitement since it unveiled its latest trailer at a global IMAX fan event on July 8.

According to Warner Bros., exclusive footage from ‘Dune Part Three’ will be shown at IMAX 70mm screenings of ‘The Odyssey’. Villeneuve himself announced this tie-in during the trailer event, revealing that audiences would get a glimpse of an intense battle sequence from the upcoming film before ‘The Odyssey’ begins its IMAX showings.

The footage is the same extended sequence that Villeneuve presented to audiences at CinemaCon in April, but this time it will be shown in full IMAX 70mm. Villeneuve described the scene as one that highlights the repercussions of Paul Atreides’ decisions from ‘Dune Part Two’, offering viewers a preview of the darker, consequence-driven tone expected in the third film.

‘Dune Part Three’ is based on Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel ‘Dune Messiah’ and takes place nearly two decades after Paul, portrayed by Timothée Chalamet, took control of the Imperium. The film depicts him as a more ruthless emperor facing a vast conspiracy against him, with Zendaya returning as Chani alongside Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, and a cast that includes Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, and Robert Pattinson.

This cross-promotion represents an unusually proactive marketing strategy for a film that is still five months away from its release. It also has an interesting symmetry, given that Zendaya appears in both films, portraying Athena in ‘The Odyssey’ and Chani in ‘Dune Part Three’. Villeneuve also shared that he has assembled a small team of two filmmakers specifically to create experimental footage for the new movie, adding another layer of intrigue to what audiences can expect upon its premiere.

The trailer debuted globally on July 8 during a simulcast event across eight cities, including Los Angeles, London, Toronto, and Abu Dhabi, highlighting the lengths Warner Bros. and Legendary are willing to go to generate excitement for the trilogy’s conclusion months before its actual release.

‘Dune Part Three’ is set to premiere in theaters and IMAX on December 18, coinciding with Marvel’s ‘Avengers Doomsday’, creating a competitive holiday release landscape between the two films. Notably, Warner Bros. and Legendary have promoted the film with the specific phrase ‘only in theaters and IMAX’, a deliberate distinction since ‘Avengers Doomsday’ is not expected to feature the IMAX branding on that same date.

‘The Odyssey’ will hit theaters on July 17, following preview screenings the night before, with Nolan’s film maintaining exclusive access to IMAX screens in the weeks to come.
