Fan-favorite films that struggle at the box office often find themselves in a frustrating limbo, loved enough to keep hope alive but not profitable enough to ensure a sequel. ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ has spent the last few years in this gray area, receiving rave reviews without translating that enthusiasm into blockbuster ticket sales.

The 2023 adaptation featured Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, and Hugh Grant, earning accolades for its cast, humor, and faithful representation of the beloved tabletop game. Despite this critical acclaim, the film grossed approximately $205 million worldwide against a $150 million budget, a result that Paramount deemed insufficient to greenlight a sequel immediately.

However, rights holder Hasbro continues to push for a follow-up behind the scenes. Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein confirmed that Hasbro is determined to find a new studio for “Dungeons & Dragons 2,” with a completed screenplay for the sequel already ready, as reported by The Playlist.

Daley and Goldstein shared this update while appearing on The Playlist’s Discourse Podcast to promote their new Apple TV action comedy “Mayday.” According to The Playlist, the duo confirmed that they have already written a full sequel script, although the project’s budget remains a significant hurdle between the finished screenplay and an actual greenlight.

This budget concern is not new. Speaking with ScreenRant at San Diego Comic-Con, Goldstein previously mentioned that the sequel script exists but questioned whether it would ever “see the light of day for a number of financial reasons,” acknowledging the high production costs of fantasy films, even when fans are eager for more.

Complicating matters, both companies behind the original film have experienced significant corporate changes in recent years. Paramount was acquired by Skydance Media in August 2025, while eOne, the production company that co-produced “Honor Among Thieves” and was once a Hasbro subsidiary, was acquired by Lionsgate in December 2023, according to TheWrap.

Daley pointed to specific circumstances he believes hindered the original film’s box office performance. According to The Playlist, Daley argued the movie suffered from unfortunate timing, as it was released in March 2023, just days before Universal and Illumination’s massive hit “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”

In addition to that scheduling conflict, Daley noted the film debuted roughly a month after Wizards of the Coast made controversial changes to the tabletop game’s licensing rules, prompting many longtime D&D fans to boycott the franchise. Combined with what he described as marketing that failed to adequately reach audiences unfamiliar with the source material, Daley called it “a perfect storm” against the film’s commercial success.

Adding another layer of uncertainty, a separate live-action “Dungeons & Dragons” television series that was in development for Paramount+ was scrapped by the streamer in May 2024, before reportedly finding a new home at Netflix in February 2025. This shifting landscape across both film and television indicates that Hasbro remains committed to keeping the D&D franchise alive on screen, even as individual projects continue to move between studios.

With a finished script in hand and Hasbro actively searching for a new partner, “Dungeons & Dragons 2” remains a viable possibility rather than a dead project, even if its path to production remains uncertain.
