Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are gearing up to dive back into the world of ‘Dutton Ranch’, but season 2 is set to introduce significant changes behind the scenes. Following the first season’s dramatic cliffhanger, the two stars shared insights about the future of the ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff, the new showrunner, and how the series will evolve without Taylor Sheridan’s writing.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reilly and Hauser addressed the challenges of moving forward with ‘Dutton Ranch’ after the original ‘Yellowstone’ era. The first season concluded with Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler confronting a perilous new threat after realizing they were betrayed by their business partner Beulah Jackson, portrayed by Annette Bening. The finale also left viewers on the edge of their seats with the kidnapping of their adopted son Carter, played by Finn Little.

This emotional conclusion has made season 2 a must-watch for fans, prompting Paramount+ to quickly confirm the show’s return. However, the series will see a new creative leader, as Benjamin Cavell takes over from Chad Feehan as showrunner.

For Kelly Reilly, continuing Beth Dutton’s journey without Taylor Sheridan’s dialogue posed a significant challenge. She expressed her uncertainty to The Hollywood Reporter about how the character would adapt in a new creative landscape.

“I was very uncertain of what this would be without his words. I didn’t know if it was gonna work. I didn’t know if she was going to work,” Reilly shared.

She elaborated that a transformation was necessary for Beth to evolve. “It was like a part of the character had to die in order for me to begin her again,” she explained.

Reilly feels that this experience has allowed her to understand Beth in a new light. She noted that the character has matured while retaining the strength and attitude that fans adore. Cole Hauser echoed her sentiments, stating that the success of season 1 was a tremendous relief after months of hard work. He mentioned to The Hollywood Reporter that the cast and crew poured their hearts and souls into the production.

“It was not easy doing the show. We put our hearts and souls into this. It was a long shoot. It was hot; it was cold. Everything was thrown at us,” Hauser remarked. He added that witnessing the audience’s reaction was the most gratifying aspect. “What I love most is when the audience speaks,” he said.

Looking ahead, both actors are enthusiastic about collaborating with Benjamin Cavell. Hauser revealed that a trusted colleague recommended Cavell after working with him on ‘SEAL Team’. He expressed confidence in the direction of season 2 based on their initial discussions.

“I cannot wait for this new iteration of Ben and his team of guys that he hires, along with David Glasser and the people who are involved, and to really sink our teeth into what this next show is going to be,” Hauser stated. Reilly also commended executive producer and director Christina Voros, recognizing her as a vital part of the creative team. She believes the show is in capable hands as it embarks on its next chapter.

One of the central storylines for season 2 will revolve around Beth and Rip’s efforts to rescue Carter. Reilly expressed her enjoyment in seeing the couple protect someone they cherish, as it brings out the best in them.

“I love Beth and Rip having to care about something. That really means something. And Carter is that. They’re at their best when they’re fighting for somebody else, always,” she said.

Production for ‘Dutton Ranch’ season 2 is slated to commence in early 2027, with the writers’ room beginning their work prior to filming. While many details remain under wraps, Reilly and Hauser are optimistic about the show’s new direction.

With fresh writers, ongoing involvement from Sheridan, and a strong bond among the cast, season 2 promises to be a significant new chapter in the Dutton family saga.
