Paramount is implementing a significant change behind the scenes of ‘Dutton Ranch’ as the ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff gears up for its second season.

Reports indicate that Benjamin Cavell has been appointed as the new showrunner for Season 2, taking over from Chad Feehan, who departed from the role in June after contributing to the first season.

Cavell is a well-known figure in television, with a robust portfolio that includes work on notable series such as ‘Justified’, ‘SEAL Team’, and ‘The Stand’. His expertise in crime dramas, military narratives, and large-scale adaptations positions him as a fitting choice for the expanding ‘Yellowstone’ universe.

This transition follows Paramount’s official renewal of ‘Dutton Ranch’ for a second season. The series has quickly emerged as a significant success for the network, marking the largest original series debut in Paramount+ history. Its launch on Paramount Network also achieved one of the strongest cable premieres in recent years, demonstrating that audiences remain highly engaged with stories tied to the ‘Yellowstone’ franchise.

‘Dutton Ranch’ continues the narrative of Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, portrayed by Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, who reprise their beloved roles from ‘Yellowstone’. The two actors recently discussed the behind-the-scenes changes during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, explaining that such changes are commonplace in the television industry.

“Showrunners change all the time,” Hauser said. “This business is about adapting. We’ve been doing this for a long time. Things change. People move on.” Reilly also expressed her appreciation for working with Feehan during the first season and commended the creative process behind the series.

“We finished [season one] with Chad beautifully,” Reilly said. “We finished this season together. It was a really difficult but really satisfying show to make. And so was ‘Yellowstone’. So is anything worth making. We’re all creative minds and we all work together and I’m so proud of that.”

With Cavell now at the helm, Season 2 will introduce a new creative leader while continuing the storyline established in the first season.

Cavell brings a wealth of experience to the project, having created the series ‘The Institute’, based on Stephen King’s novel, and also developed ‘SEAL Team’ for CBS and Paramount+. He co-created ‘The Stand’ and contributed to ‘Justified’ for six seasons, eventually becoming an executive producer on the critically acclaimed series.

The inaugural season of ‘Dutton Ranch’ featured a stellar cast alongside Reilly and Hauser, including Finn Little, Juan Pablo Raba, Jai Courtney, J.R. Villarreal, Marc Menchaca, Natalie Alyn Lind, and Oscar nominees Ed Harris and Annette Bening.

Produced by Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios, the same teams behind the broader ‘Yellowstone’ franchise, details regarding the plot for Season 2 remain under wraps. However, Cavell’s addition indicates Paramount’s commitment to further developing the success of this latest chapter in the Dutton family saga.
