Marvel’s ‘Blade’ Faces Uncertainty Amid Xbox Studio Restructuring Rumors
The future of Marvel’s ‘Blade’ game has become a significant topic of discussion following new reports that highlight potential changes at Xbox and its game studios.
The upcoming ‘Blade’ title, developed by Arkane Lyon, was notably absent from the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase, raising concerns among fans about the project’s status. Nevertheless, Bethesda’s Todd Howard has indicated that development is progressing well and that the team is making impressive strides behind the scenes.
In a recent conversation, Howard expressed his enthusiasm for what Arkane Lyon is creating. “I’m not at liberty to say when [we’ll see more], but I saw some stuff just yesterday [on May 21] and the folks at Arkane [Studios, the developers] are doing a really, really great job,” he stated.
While his remarks provided some reassurance, concerns about the broader Xbox gaming division continue to escalate. Reports indicate that several studios affiliated with Microsoft may undergo significant changes, including potential closures, layoffs, or restructuring.
‘Blade’ is not the only Xbox project facing uncertainty. Reports have also raised questions about ‘State of Decay 3’ and its developer Undead Labs, with rumors suggesting the studio might be impacted by upcoming cuts. Other teams reportedly facing tough decisions include Double Fine, known for ‘Psychonauts’, Compulsion Games, recognized for ‘South of Midnight’, and Ninja Theory, the creators of ‘Hellblade’.
According to Game File reports, some studios may be exploring options to become independent from Microsoft. This situation has reportedly jeopardized hundreds of jobs across Xbox’s gaming business, including teams associated with Bethesda and Activision Blizzard.
Concerns began after Xbox CEO Asha Sharma sent an internal message regarding a company “reset.” Many fans interpreted this message as a sign that Microsoft was preparing for layoffs and potential studio changes.
In the memo, Sharma outlined the need for improvement in Xbox’s current business model. She noted that, excluding Activision Blizzard King, Microsoft had invested over $20 billion in content, platforms, and hardware support over the past five years, while annual revenue had declined.
“Excluding Activision Blizzard King, over the past five years, we have spent over $20 billion on ongoing investments in our content, platform, and hardware subsidy, but our annual revenue has declined nearly half a billion during that time. Going forward, this cannot continue,” Sharma remarked.
An analyst speaking with IGN described the challenge facing some studios, stating “the studios most exposed are brilliant for prestige and rotten for the spreadsheet.” This comment highlights the disparity between critical acclaim and commercial success, as several Xbox-owned studios have produced respected games but have struggled to achieve significant financial success.
The situation has reportedly led to leadership changes as well. The Game Business reported that Xbox Game Studios boss Craig Duncan has stepped down, while Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier warned that major cuts could be imminent, describing the situation as a potential “bloodbath” for Xbox.
Despite the prevailing uncertainty, ‘Blade’ has not been officially canceled. Todd Howard’s recent comments suggest that Arkane Lyon is still actively engaged in the project. However, until Microsoft offers more clarity, fans will remain vigilant as Xbox navigates the future of its gaming division.
