‘Dutton Ranch’ Stars Discuss Season 2 Showrunner Change After Taylor Sheridan Exit
Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are sharing their thoughts on the future of ‘Dutton Ranch’ following a significant behind-the-scenes shift. The actors expressed their excitement about the decision to appoint Benjamin Cavell as the new showrunner for season 2.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Dutton Ranch’ encountered an unexpected creative shake-up even before its first season premiered. Creator Chad Feehan was reportedly stepping down as showrunner due to disagreements over the series’ direction. This situation raised questions about the show’s future, but Paramount+ later confirmed that season 2 would proceed with Cavell at the helm.
In their interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hauser and Reilly addressed the transition for the first time. Hauser mentioned that he became interested in Cavell after receiving a recommendation from a trusted source who had previously collaborated with him on the CBS series ‘SEAL Team.’ He described Cavell as “somebody that I trust with my life.”
Hauser elaborated on his relationship with this longtime friend, highlighting their shared experiences, including training and time spent together in Louisiana. After learning about Cavell’s creative vision, Hauser expressed eagerness to explore the new showrunner’s ideas for the series.
He noted that he had a positive initial meeting with Cavell and is excited to see what the new creative team will bring to the show. “I cannot wait for this new iteration of Ben and his team of guys that he hires, along with David Glasser and the people who are involved, and to really sink our teeth into what this next show is going to be,” Hauser stated.
Kelly Reilly also conveyed her enthusiasm for season 2, though she humorously mentioned needing a break after the busy promotional period for the first season. Nonetheless, she has already begun contemplating the future of Beth’s storyline.
Reilly praised Cristina Voros, an executive producer and director from season 1, who will continue her involvement in the series. She referred to Voros as a “lighthouse creative” and expressed confidence in the team’s direction moving forward.

“Everything we do goes through her brain because she’s so brilliant, and she’s going to be working with Ben. I feel like we’ve got a bit of an A-team,” Reilly remarked. She also noted that Taylor Sheridan is expected to remain involved with story ideas for the upcoming season.
The comments indicate that season 2 will feature more input from Sheridan, especially following the reported creative disagreements during the first season. With Reilly and Hauser also acting as executive producers, the team seems focused on enhancing the next chapter.
Cavell’s appointment has garnered attention due to his previous work in television. He was part of the creative team behind ‘Justified,’ received an Emmy nomination for his contributions to ‘Homeland,’ and developed the television adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Institute.’
However, fans might need to be patient before new episodes air. Hauser mentioned that the season 2 writers’ room is still in its early stages, meaning scripts are not yet ready. Production could take some time, with a potential return date not expected until late 2027.
For now, the cast appears optimistic about the changes. With a new showrunner, continued involvement from Sheridan, and beloved characters like Beth and Rip returning, ‘Dutton Ranch’ season 2 is poised to be a significant next step in the Yellowstone universe.
