EA Remains Committed to ‘Marvel’s Iron Man’ Game Amid BioWare Closure
It’s been quite a while since Tony Stark’s armor had a proper console appearance. When EA first announced its project in 2022, it was set to be the first non-VR ‘Iron Man’ title since 2010. Fans have been eagerly anticipating its release, despite long periods of silence.
The game is being developed by Motive Studio, the Montreal team known for the ‘Dead Space’ remake and ‘Star Wars: Squadrons’. It was introduced as a single-player, third-person action-adventure game featuring an original story in collaboration with Marvel Games, and is the first of several titles planned under a broader EA and Marvel partnership. Olivier Proulx, who previously contributed to ‘Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’, is leading the team.
After years of minimal updates, an unfinished build leaked in August, showcasing about 2.5 minutes of footage with a test watermark. Motive confirmed the authenticity of the leak through the game’s official X account. This week, EA reaffirmed its commitment to ‘Marvel’s Iron Man’ at a time when the publisher is making significant cuts elsewhere.
According to a report from Variety, EA is restructuring its studio operations following its recent transition to a private company. In the same announcement, executives emphasized their dedication to delivering on two major upcoming launches: ‘Marvel’s Iron Man’ and the next ‘Star Wars Jedi’ game.
The context is crucial. EA described action-adventure as one of the most competitive and high-stakes genres in the industry, requiring the company’s full support behind each game. The report indicates that EA will concentrate on fewer large-scale action-adventure projects simultaneously.
The restructuring is significant, with layoffs expected to impact about 3% of EA’s global workforce, translating to around 400 employees based on their last reported headcount of 14,500. BioWare, known for ‘Dragon Age’ and ‘Mass Effect’, is being shut down as part of this move.
Other divisions within the company are being reorganized rather than closed. Respawn and DICE are reportedly collaborating on a future project identified by multiple sources as ‘Star Wars: Battlefront 3’, while EA plans to continue investing heavily in ‘Apex Legends’. In this context, mentioning ‘Iron Man’ alongside ‘Star Wars Jedi’ highlights which licensed games the publisher prioritizes.
It’s also notable that the two launches mentioned do not include the open-world Black Panther game, which was reportedly the second title in the Marvel deal.
This isn’t the first time ‘Iron Man’ has faced challenges. In February 2024, EA laid off around 670 employees, canceled Respawn’s Star Wars shooter, and indicated a shift away from future licensed IP. Even then, the company confirmed that ‘Iron Man’ and the Black Panther game were still in development.
From this perspective, the latest reassurance appears to be part of a pattern rather than a surprise. Each time EA has streamlined its projects, the Motive game has remained on the list, even as other licensed titles have been dropped.
Details about the game are still sparse. The leaked footage suggests a game centered around fast flight and intricate combat, essential for an armored hero, but it was unrefined and lacks an official timeline. EA has not disclosed a release date, and given that the test build was dated just two days before it leaked, reports indicate that a 2027 launch or later may be more realistic.
Motive has also stated that it will utilize Unreal Engine 5 for the project instead of EA’s proprietary Frostbite engine. This decision was revealed back in 2023, hinting at how long the studio has been developing the game.
For fans, the key takeaway is straightforward. A project that has been quiet for years has just received another public endorsement from the budget holders, which may hold more significance than any single trailer.
