John Steinbeck’s expansive American epic has often posed challenges for mass appeal. This dense narrative, filled with themes of family, guilt, and free will, diverges significantly from the realms of true crime or reality television. Thus, the debut of ‘East of Eden’ on Netflix stands out as one of the more intriguing streaming developments of the week.

The seven-episode limited series, crafted by Zoe Kazan, features Florence Pugh in the role of Cathy Ames and Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask. The cast also includes Mike Faist, Tracy Letts, Martha Plimpton, Hoon Lee, Joseph Zada, Joe Anders, and Ciarán Hinds. Kazan has expressed that Pugh was her sole choice for the role of Cathy, and Pugh also serves as an executive producer. The show premiered on Netflix on October 1.

Netflix’s latest weekly ratings reveal a mix of strong and somewhat complex results. According to a post from What’s on Netflix, the Steinbeck adaptation launched at No. 1 with 6.5 million views, achieved within just the first four days of streaming, propelling the show to the top of the platform’s weekly TV rankings.

‘East of Eden’ emerged victorious in a competitive landscape. ‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’ secured second place with 5.7 million views in its third week, while the ‘A Different World’ reboot claimed third with 5.1 million in its second week. The unscripted series ‘Wonka’s The Golden Ticket’ landed in fourth with 4.3 million views.

Netflix calculates views by dividing total hours watched by a title’s runtime. With ‘East of Eden’ spanning approximately 7 hours, the 6.5 million views indicate a significant amount of time spent in Steinbeck’s Salinas Valley.

However, not everyone is celebrating. Deadline referred to it as a soft opening, highlighting that it marked the lowest chart-topping debut since late March, when the second season of ‘One Piece’ led with 5.9 million views in its third week. What’s on Netflix’s comparison of recent limited series places this debut at 17th on its opening-week list, falling short of the biggest launches in the past two years.

Context is crucial, though. A prestige period drama based on a 1952 novel isn’t designed to chase blockbuster numbers, and it still managed to outperform a strong lineup of competitors. For a limited series that demanded substantial creative investment, maintaining the top position is a notable achievement.

Reviews have been favorable. The series opened with an impressive 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing the 1955 James Dean film by two points, and it holds an 80 on Metacritic. It also ranks as the third-highest-rated TV series in Pugh’s career, achieving career-high TV scores for co-stars Faist and Anders.

The show has also sparked renewed interest in the source material. Penguin Classics has reportedly experienced a 200% increase in sales since Netflix announced the greenlight. Viewers from 93 countries tuned in during its opening stretch, as reported by FandomWire.

Part of the series’ allure lies in its reimagined narrative. Netflix portrays Cathy as an antihero whose life intertwines with generations of the Trask family, particularly brothers Adam and Charles, delving into the darker aspects of the California dream. Collider notes that Cathy is given significantly more depth than in the renowned 1955 film, which focused primarily on the latter part of the novel.

This creative choice places Pugh at the heart of a morally intricate role, with critics praising her performance and the scale of Kazan’s adaptation. Kazan faced the challenge of making substantial cuts and modifications to condense the expansive novel into seven episodes.

The momentum comes at a busy time for the actress, who is also involved in ‘Cassandra at the Wedding,’ based on Dorothy Baker’s 1962 novel, where she will portray identical twin sisters. If ‘East of Eden’ continues to gain traction, it may well be remembered as one of the defining TV events of the year.
