Emily Blunt has revealed intriguing details about how she crafted the alien voice for her role in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming sci-fi film ‘Disclosure Day’, emphasizing her discomfort with the idea of using artificial intelligence for the task.

In ‘Disclosure Day’, set for release on June 12, Blunt portrays meteorologist Margaret Fairchild. A pivotal moment in the trailer showcases her character producing an eerie alien-like clicking sound during a tense transformation.

During an appearance on Hot Ones, Blunt discussed the production process, noting that while the option of using AI was considered, she quickly dismissed it. She stated, “There’s various ways you could do it. You could go the AI route, which I’m a bit terrified of.”

Opting for a more hands-on approach, Blunt created the voice herself through physical performance. She collaborated closely with the sound team to explore various noises and textures.

Blunt described filming the scene as a long continuous take, where her character gradually breaks down on camera. She explained, “It’s a four-minute oner that we shot that leads up to that moment, where she’s gradually sort of disintegrating.”

Instead of traditional dialogue, she focused on producing unusual vocal effects live on set. She shared, “I thought I could make some real, really strange sounds. So, I said, ‘Maybe I could come in and we’ll just do a range of weird sounds.’ And it’s what we did. I did sort of the clicking sounds. I did sort of humming sounds, consonant sounds, breathing-strange sounds.”

To capture these unique sounds, the production employed a specialized recording setup. Blunt explained, “The sound designer put one microphone by her mouth and another by her throat. It captures it in a really weird way. And then the sound designer went away and created that weird sound.”

Director Steven Spielberg has also expressed his concerns regarding the role of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. He has made it clear that he does not support replacing human creativity with AI-generated performances. He stated, “I’m not willing to substitute, because I don’t really believe in sentience. I don’t believe there is any substitute for the soul. I don’t think that is an algorithm that is inventible.”

Spielberg added that while AI can serve as a production tool, it should never replace human artistic decision-making. He remarked, “Use AI as a tool, but do not use AI as the final word on anything creative. That’s where I draw the line.”

‘Disclosure Day’ follows a cybersecurity whistleblower, portrayed by Josh O’Connor, who attempts to expose a global conspiracy linked to alien contact. Blunt’s character becomes embroiled in the escalating crisis as the situation grows increasingly bizarre.

The film also stars Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, and Wyatt Russell, and is positioned as a large-scale sci-fi thriller that emphasizes human emotion and the fear of the unknown.

Blunt’s insights underscore that even in a film centered around advanced technology and extraterrestrial themes, the creative process behind performance heavily relies on physical acting, experimentation, and human instinct rather than digital generation.
