‘Michael’ Surpasses Expectations With Record-Breaking Box Office Numbers
The biopic ‘Michael’ about Michael Jackson has emerged as one of the most significant movie success stories of 2026, far exceeding initial box office predictions and continuing to thrive weeks after its release.
Box office data reveals that the film opened much stronger than analysts had anticipated. In the United States and Canada, ‘Michael’ was expected to perform well, but the final figures were significantly higher than forecasts. The movie raked in an impressive $97 million during its opening weekend, surpassing projections by $28.7 million.
A key indicator of strong audience interest was the film’s remarkable preview-to-weekend growth. ‘Michael’ achieved a 7.7x multiplier from previews to its full opening weekend, indicating that interest surged rapidly following early screenings.
The film also performed exceptionally well internationally. Overseas markets contributed around $121.6 million during the opening period, bringing the worldwide debut to approximately $218.8 million. This achievement is particularly impressive given that it did not rely heavily on China.
In the weeks that followed, ‘Michael’ continued to demonstrate remarkable staying power. By June 29, 2026, the film reached a worldwide total of $977.5 million, positioning it just shy of the $1 billion mark. Reported box office figures indicate that the movie has earned $370.2 million in the United States and Canada, alongside $607.3 million from international markets.

This success has positioned ‘Michael’ among the highest-grossing biographical films ever made. It has now surpassed ‘Oppenheimer’ to become the highest-grossing biographical film in history and has overtaken ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ as the biggest musical biopic ever released.
The movie has also become the most successful film in Lionsgate’s history, surpassing ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’, which previously held the studio’s top worldwide box office record.
The strong opening was evident from the start. During Wednesday and Thursday previews, ‘Michael’ earned $12.6 million in North America. Its first full day brought in $39.5 million, setting a new record for the biggest opening day ever for a biographical film and the highest opening day of 2026 at that time.
The film’s $97.2 million domestic debut broke records for both biographical and musical movies, surpassing ‘Straight Outta Compton’s’ previous record of $60.2 million.
International audiences also responded enthusiastically. The movie opened with record-breaking numbers in several countries and earned $24.4 million from IMAX screenings alone, marking the biggest IMAX opening ever for a musical biographical film.
As ‘Michael’ continues to generate box office revenue, fans are already anticipating ‘Michael Part II’. Following the first movie’s tremendous success, expectations for the sequel will likely be significantly higher.
A follow-up film could leverage the first movie’s strong word of mouth, vast global audience, and renewed interest in Michael Jackson’s story. If the sequel captures a similar level of attention, it could potentially open even bigger than the original.
For now, ‘Michael’ stands as one of the biggest box office stories of the year, demonstrating that audiences are still eager to see major music legends brought to life on the big screen.
