More than two weeks have passed since the series finale of The Boys aired, yet discussions surrounding it remain vibrant. Fans are still engaged in debates about the final episode, prompting the show’s creator Eric Kripke to share his insights during an interview with TVLine.

Kripke mentioned that he has been keeping an eye on online reactions, despite knowing he probably shouldn’t. He acknowledged the mix of positive and negative feedback and expressed understanding regarding the strong feelings from viewers.

In his conversation with TVLine, Kripke stated, “I’m not healthy in that I’m like, ‘Oh, I never look.’ I see it all. Obviously there are a lot of unhappy people online, but there are two things I would say: First, I’m just glad people are passionate, legitimately. My job is to make people passionate about the work I put out. If they’re arguing about it and hating it and fighting, that’s all passion, man. You’re watching, and that’s all good. My job is to get an emotional reaction, not necessarily to dictate what that emotional reaction is.”

He also pointed out that online reactions can sometimes seem more significant than they truly are. According to Kripke, the most vocal online users do not always reflect the majority of viewers.

He added, “The second thing I would say is a lesson I’ve learned a thousand times over: the online world is not the real world. We have way north of 60 million viewers, so that makes the online storm, which feels very all-encompassing, actually a fraction of a single percentage point. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, of course, and I’m sorry if I disappointed you, but it was the story I wanted to tell. You just have to put it into perspective of it being a reasonably small, vocal audience when the vast majority seem to be happily tuning in.”

The finale itself sparked considerable conversation among fans. It featured several significant character deaths and emotional moments that elicited strong reactions online. Some viewers were taken aback by the conclusions of key characters, while others debated the choices made for the final story arcs.

Kripke also discussed the writing process for the final season. He revealed that the ending was determined early in production, and the writers did not make significant changes as the finale approached. According to Kripke, the structure of the final episode was established during the initial weeks of work on the season.

He explained to TVLine that the writers’ room concentrated more on execution than altering the story direction. He noted, “We had figured out who was going to live and die and when it was all going to happen. So by the time it came to actually writing and figuring out the episode, we basically had everything already set.”

Kripke mentioned that one of the most challenging aspects was ensuring that each major character had their moment. He emphasized the importance of giving every main character a clear final scene or emotional beat before the conclusion of the story.

He remarked, “The hardest part was structuring the script so that, as we’re heading into the inner sanctum of the Oval Office, every character gets a moment to be cool. They all deserve a moment to be cool.”

With the series now concluded, Kripke has reiterated his support for the ending, despite the mixed reactions from fans. He has acknowledged the disappointment expressed by some viewers but has also stressed that the story was always intended to conclude in this manner.

The conversation surrounding The Boys finale continues to thrive online, with fans actively sharing their thoughts and debating the implications of the ending for the characters and the overall narrative.
