ESPN Transforms NBA Opening Night Into an ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Event With Doctor Doom Takeover
Disney, which owns both ESPN and Marvel Entertainment, often finds creative ways to merge sports and superhero fandom. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ just under two months away from its theatrical release, the studio’s marketing efforts are extending beyond cinemas into various segments of Disney’s vast empire. The latest promotional video for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ highlights the extent of this crossover.
The timing aligns perfectly with the start of the 2026-27 NBA season, which kicked off on Tuesday, Oct. 20, featuring an opening-day tripleheader on NBC and Peacock. ESPN’s coverage is set to begin on Wednesday, Oct. 21, showcasing a doubleheader that includes Giannis Antetokounmpo’s debut with the Heat and LaMelo Ball’s first game with the Timberwolves.
In this context, ESPN has released a new hype video, a 2:18 promo created in collaboration with the NBA. The video mimics the style of the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ trailer, featuring a title card that proclaims “NBA IS BACK” in lettering reminiscent of the Avengers logo, set against a vibrant green backdrop with a shadowy figure resembling Doctor Doom. As reported by ClutchPoints, the video begins with the Marvel Studios logo being overshadowed by NBA on ESPN.

The promo features a dramatic voiceover by Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, utilizing audio from the movie’s trailer, while showcasing a montage of NBA stars. The reigning champion New York Knicks are depicted as the formidable challenge that the other 29 teams must overcome.
The video also captures the collaborative spirit of the film, repurposing Thor’s call for unity among rivals to rally against a shared adversary. It concludes with LeBron James and the 76ers at their Media Day photoshoot, a fitting scene as the Sixers are set to face the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, where New York will unveil its championship banner before the game.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled for release on Dec. 18, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, with Downey portraying Doctor Doom instead of Tony Stark. The narrative pits the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men against Doom, and the first full trailer has already garnered over 13 million views online within just four hours of its debut.
Early ticket sales indicate significant interest, with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ reportedly raking in $16.5 million in advance sales on its first day, nearly double the first-day figures for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ It will premiere alongside ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which has secured the entire IMAX footprint for three weeks, limiting ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ access to IMAX screens.
The stakes are high for that opening weekend. The last time the entire MCU came together was for ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in 2019, which opened to an impressive $357 million domestically and $1.2 billion globally. The Russos’ latest film arrives over seven years after that blockbuster, ensuring Marvel is taking every precaution to maximize its success.

Basketball has become a vibrant platform for the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ campaign. Australia’s NBL dedicated Round 11 of its season as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Round, with all ten clubs donning specially themed jerseys, a partnership that was announced in September.
ESPN has a history of collaborating with Marvel as well. In a previous crossover, ‘Marvel’s Arena of Heroes,’ it produced an alternate NBA telecast featuring an original Marvel storyline, 3D virtual characters, and custom graphics during a Warriors-Pelicans game. This time, the approach is simpler, presenting a trailer-style hype reel that reaches a vast audience on one of the most significant nights in the basketball calendar.
For Marvel, this strategy is logical. Sports fans are among the most passionate audiences, and a hype video featuring Doctor Doom is an effective way to generate buzz about the movie while fans await tip-off. The true test will come in December when the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four must live up to the excitement.
