Marvel has a knack for weaving real-world elements into its narratives, and fans eagerly search for these hidden gems. A casual mention can spark significant discussions, especially when it honors someone from outside the typical Hollywood sphere. The latest instance features boxing icon Manny Pacquiao in the MCU’s new Disney+ series.

‘VisionQuest’ serves as the concluding chapter in a trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ in 2021 and continued with ‘Agatha All Along’ in 2024. Created by showrunner Terry Matalas, the series follows the reconstructed White Vision as he seeks to rediscover his identity and humanity following the events of ‘WandaVision.’ The show premiered on October 13 with two episodes, featuring Paul Bettany alongside James Spader as Ultron and Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy.

The third episode, titled ‘Reboot,’ includes a moment that Filipino fans are celebrating. As reported by Philstar, Pacquiao is mentioned during a dialogue between Vision and Tommy, marking the eight-division champion as an official part of the MCU universe, despite not appearing on screen or portraying a Marvel character.

This moment occurs after Vision and Tommy have rescued each other in the preceding episode and are hiding out in a hotel. Tommy accidentally injures his right hand at a vending machine, causing his powers to emerge. Vision notices the injury, but Tommy reassures him he’ll be fine, especially since he’s a southpaw, a term for left-handed individuals.

This term sparks the reference. Emily Hampshire’s E.D.I.T.H., one of the AI entities residing in Vision’s Mindspace, appears and mentions Pacquiao, recognized as one of the greatest southpaw boxers in history, along with his eight world titles.

The context enhances the humor. Tommy’s essence now inhabits a London teenager named Thomas Shepherd, a character known for exhibiting bursts of superspeed, making a reference to a boxing legend famed for his southpaw stance a fitting addition to the conversation.

Pacquiao is an ideal choice for such a cultural reference. The boxer-turned-politician has earned titles across eight weight divisions, and one boxing historian has deemed him the greatest southpaw fighter of all time. At 47, he remains the first global sports icon to emerge from the Philippines.

This shoutout adds to a growing list of Philippine references within the franchise. Philstar notes that the trend began with Filipino-American actor Jacob Batalon portraying Ned Leeds, Peter Parker’s Fil-Am best friend in the Tom Holland films.

While it’s a brief moment, it highlights how significant Pacquiao’s legacy has become. A mention in one of the world’s largest entertainment franchises resonates particularly well with fans in the Philippines, who seldom see their heroes recognized in this manner.

Pacquiao’s mention comes as ‘VisionQuest’ continues to garner acclaim. The series has been Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with its Tomatometer score fluctuating between the mid-80s to 90%, while its audience score debuted at 88%. Critics have praised Bettany and Spader, although not all reviews have been favorable, with IndieWire’s Ben Travers assigning it a C grade.

Episodes 3 and 4, ‘Reboot’ and ‘Malware,’ were released together on October 20. The remaining episodes will air weekly, with ‘Firewall’ and ‘Deadlock’ on October 27, ‘Immolation’ on November 3, and the finale, ‘Forever,’ on November 10.

This series also marks the last new live-action Marvel show on the Disney+ schedule before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters on December 18. With several episodes yet to come, fans have ample opportunity to search for more Easter eggs like this one.
