Eternals Star Says Return to MCU Unlikely

The Eternals movie was released back in 2021 and marked the first major MCU release following Avengers: Endgame. Unfortunately, its reception leaned largely negative, with many fans considering it the beginning of the MCU’s decline.

Since then, the Eternals have been largely absent from the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the sleeping Celestial from the film was briefly referenced in the latest MCU installment, Captain America: Brave New World, the Eternals themselves have yet to reappear.

Kit Harington, who plays Dane Whitman (aka Black Knight), mentioned about six months ago that he currently isn’t aware of any plans to bring his character back in future projects. While there were rumors that Eternals 2 was in development, it’s believed the project was quietly shelved following the poor reception of The Marvels.

One of the next major opportunities for the Eternals to return would be Avengers: Doomsday. So far, 28 cast members have been confirmed, including heroes from Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and returning Fox X-Men stars like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden.

However, not a single member of the Eternals cast has been confirmed to reprise their role in the film.

In a red carpet interview with The Direct at SXSW, Lauren Ridloff, who played Makkari in Eternals, said she doesn’t expect to return to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday, or possibly at all. Through her sign language interpreter, she responded to a question about a potential return by saying, “Not likely,” joking that her “magic eight ball” says the same.

Lauren Ridloff: “Not likely. I don’t know, my magic eight ball is telling me ‘Not likely.'”

Some members of Eternals have been featured in What If..? animated series but you can hardly call that MCU return.

What the studio has in store for the stars remains to be seen, but so far their future looks grim.
