Euphoria concluded its final season with impressive audience numbers, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics. The series, featuring Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer, and Maude Apatow, saw its viewership grow steadily leading up to the finale.

The last episode aired on May 31, attracting nearly 9 million viewers across various platforms, as reported by HBO. This figure represented an increase from the season premiere, which garnered around 8.5 million viewers. Such growth towards the season’s end is noteworthy, as many shows typically experience a decline in viewership as they wrap up.

A month post-finale, Nielsen released its streaming report for the week of June 1 to June 7. The data indicated that Euphoria continued to be widely viewed even after its final episode, with a significant rise in total viewing minutes across streaming platforms.

Nielsen ranked the show among the top-performing acquired series for that week, placing fifth overall in that category, just behind popular titles like Grey’s Anatomy, The Big Bang Theory, and SpongeBob SquarePants. It also trailed the animated favorite Bluey, which topped the list.

During the tracking week of June 1 to June 7, Euphoria amassed 666 million minutes watched. While this number is notable due to its association with the number “666,” there is no indication from Nielsen or HBO that it holds any significance beyond the viewing data.

The series has had a mixed reception throughout its run. After becoming a cultural phenomenon following its 2019 debut and second season in 2022, its final season faced criticism from reviewers. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the season holds a 43% rating, marking it as the lowest-rated installment of the show.

Critics pointed to issues with structure and storytelling, describing it as uneven and unfocused. Nevertheless, audience interest remained robust, indicating a disconnect between critical feedback and viewer engagement.

The production of the final season was also a topic of much discussion behind the scenes. The lengthy gap between seasons led to scheduling challenges as the main cast became prominent Hollywood stars. Zendaya, in particular, saw her career flourish, taking on significant film roles during the show’s production.

Creator Sam Levinson faced public scrutiny following the reception of his HBO series The Idol, which did not fare well. These elements contributed to heightened attention on Euphoria’s final season before it premiered.

Despite the criticism, the show’s streaming performance indicates a sustained interest in its characters and narratives. The combination of weekly Nielsen data and HBO’s internal metrics suggests that the series maintained a solid audience base until its conclusion.

The promotional messaging for the final season, including the phrase “May God have mercy,” reflected the darker themes of its storyline. Zendaya’s character arc, which delved deeper into themes of faith and personal struggle, was a focal point in the concluding episodes.

While Euphoria has now concluded, its final season highlights a clear divide between critical opinion and audience viewing habits. According to HBO and Nielsen data, the series ended not with dwindling interest, but rather with one of its most successful viewing periods.
