Eve Hewson Shines in HUNGER Magazine as ‘Disclosure Day’ Gains Oscar Buzz
Some actors simply ride the wave of publicity, while others, like Eve Hewson, shape it on their own terms. The Irish actress is currently generating significant award season buzz for her role in ‘Disclosure Day’. As the film continues to screen in theaters, a striking new black and white editorial for HUNGER magazine, captured by the renowned photographer Rankin, serves as a reminder that she is truly at the peak of her career.
The editorial features Hewson in a variety of looks, from sleek and intense to quietly contemplative, all presented in moody monochrome. Rankin is celebrated for his ability to evoke genuine authenticity from his subjects, and he has certainly achieved that here. The images have quickly gained traction on social media, amassing thousands of likes and reigniting discussions about an actress who has spent over a decade crafting one of the most intriguing careers in contemporary cinema.
The timing of this editorial is significant. ‘Disclosure Day’, directed and produced by Steven Spielberg with a screenplay by David Koepp, was released theatrically in the United States on June 12. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo. Hewson portrays Jane, a former nun who is unwillingly pulled into global chaos when her boyfriend, a cybersecurity administrator played by Josh O’Connor, threatens to reveal classified files that prove the existence of aliens.
Hewson is already generating early Oscar buzz for her performance in ‘Disclosure Day’, but she is no stranger to award nominations in her home country. She has previously been nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Drama for ‘Behind Her Eyes’ and twice for Best Supporting Actress for ‘Bad Sisters’. What makes this moment feel unique is the scale of the platform. A Spielberg film brings a different kind of attention, and Hewson appears to be embracing it with remarkable confidence.
In an interview with HUNGER, Hewson reflected on her experience of reuniting with the director, noting how much has changed since their first collaboration. “I never thought I’d get another chance to work with him,” she shared. “And now it’s that dream come true moment.” She also revealed her personal connection to this project, admitting she had been obsessed with ‘E.T.’ as a child and had even asked people to call her by the film’s main character’s name. “It blows my mind,” she expressed about being at the center of a Spielberg sci-fi narrative. “Even my friends and family are blown away, because they know my obsession with E.T.”
The role itself provided her with a creatively rare opportunity. “Jane has this moral compass. She really has a good heart. She believes in the truth, she believes in humanity, and then there’s this version of her that is literally the opposite,” Hewson explained at the film’s red carpet event. “And so I got to do both, which was special.”
Hewson, the daughter of activist Ali Hewson and U2 lead singer Bono, studied drama at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts before graduating in 2013. Despite her famous lineage, she has consistently worked to overcome assumptions. “They didn’t want me to get caught up in the movie business. I mean, look at the music industry, at the movie industry, it is stark,” she told Byrdie about her parents’ initial hesitations. “They were concerned for their 15-year-old child that, all of a sudden, came home and was like: I want to be an actress.”

Those early challenges seem to have fostered the resilience that the HUNGER images convey. The Rankin shoot captures something deeper beneath the glamour. Spielberg told RTÉ Entertainment that it was Hewson’s performance in ‘Bad Sisters’ that led him to cast her in ‘Disclosure Day’. “I thought of her because I was a big fan of ‘Bad Sisters’. I thought she did extraordinary work in that. So, she got the part pretty quickly,” he remarked.
Josh O’Connor added, “As Steven said, she’s an extraordinary actor but she’s also so fun to work with. She’s also a brilliant friend and very supportive.” Coming from a co-star in a Spielberg film, that is a significant endorsement.
With ‘Disclosure Day’ currently in theaters and Oscar discussions already underway, the HUNGER editorial arrives as a timely declaration of intent. Share your thoughts in the comments about Eve Hewson’s HUNGER magazine shoot and whether you believe she is on the path to awards glory this season.
