Netflix has introduced one of the summer’s most buzzworthy romantic comedies, and the cast is just as impressive as the storyline. ‘Voicemails for Isabelle’ centers on Jill, an aspiring pastry chef dealing with the loss of her sister while continuing to leave voice messages on her late sibling’s old number. The film truly shines thanks to the talented individuals who bring it to life.

It’s hard not to be captivated by the leads of ‘Voicemails for Isabelle,’ a new rom-com currently streaming on Netflix, written and directed by Leah McKendrick. The ensemble cast is filled with talent in every role, from the romantic leads to the memorable supporting characters, with each actor making the most of their screen time.

Zoey Deutch stars as Jill, a budding chef who copes with her sister Isabelle’s death by leaving her voicemails. When Isabelle’s phone number is reassigned to Wes, an intriguing real estate agent portrayed by Nick Robinson, he begins to fall for Jill through these heartfelt messages, sharing personal stories that one would typically reserve for a close friend.

In ‘Voicemails for Isabelle,’ both Deutch and Robinson return to the genre that helped establish their popularity. Deutch previously won hearts in ‘Set It Up’ and most recently appeared in ‘Nouvelle Vague,’ while Robinson garnered acclaim for his role in ‘Love, Simon’ and the Netflix series ‘Maid.’

Director McKendrick highlights the essence of voicemails as the film’s emotional core. “Voicemails cannot be edited or rewritten,” she states. “They’re often messy, awkward, inarticulate, and sometimes confessional. Like a stream of consciousness, they tend to go a bit off the rails.” This rawness contributes to the chemistry between the two leads.

McKendrick emphasizes Deutch’s unique range as a key factor in her compelling performance, stating, “No one can access all the colors quite like Zoey can.” Robinson adds a warm restraint to Wes, making him instantly likable from his first appearance.

Deutch and Robinson are supported by a talented cast, including Nick Offerman as Jill’s over-the-top boss, Lukas Gage as a regrettable one-night stand, and Harry Shum Jr. as Wes’s loyal best friend, along with McKendrick herself in a multi-faceted role. Each actor brings a unique flavor to the narrative, balancing the film’s emotional depth with genuine humor.

Offerman portrays Chef Bastien, the pretentious pastry master at Flâner, a famous San Francisco bakery where Jill works while dreaming of opening her own establishment. His performance injects a layer of workplace absurdity that enhances the comedy.

Harry Shum Jr. and McKendrick play an engaged couple who are close friends with Wes, supporting him through both highs and lows. Their dynamic grounds the film’s more whimsical romantic elements in relatable reality.

The on-set chemistry among the cast was reportedly electric, with McKendrick noting that if this were middle school, Lukas Gage and Zoey Deutch would need to be separated due to their uncontrollable laughter.

Although her role is brief, Ciara Bravo as the title character leaves a strong and poignant impression in just a few scenes, making it clear why her sister struggles to let her go. Bravo’s performance is delicate and challenging, yet she executes it effortlessly.

Bravo embodies the late Isabelle, whose memory propels the entire narrative. The character exists more as a feeling than a physical presence, yet she influences every decision Jill makes throughout the film.

Completing the ensemble are Megan Danso, Toby Sandeman, McKendrick, Spencer Lord, and Gil Bellows, all of whom portray characters that shape the central couple’s journey from various perspectives. Together, they create a sense of community that elevates the film beyond a simple romance.

The film was initially announced in 2019 with Hailee Steinfeld in the lead and Sharon Maguire directing, produced by Sony. It underwent significant creative changes before the version available for streaming today was realized.

In May 2025, it was revealed that Leah McKendrick would write and direct a romantic comedy for Netflix featuring Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson, with principal photography commencing in July 2025 in Vancouver, Canada. The final product is a much more personal project than its original concept.

The film has a TV-14 rating and runs for one hour and fifty-eight minutes, produced by Sony Pictures and distributed by Netflix. The score was composed by Este Haim and Amanda Yamate, adding emotional depth to McKendrick’s script. The result is a rom-com crafted with care, from the performances to the soundtrack choices.

Whether you’re drawn in by Zoey Deutch finding her perfect on-screen match in Nick Robinson, Nick Offerman showcasing his signature style, or simply a reminder that the genre still addresses themes of grief and connection, this cast is sure to spark conversation. Who among the ‘Voicemails for Isabelle’ ensemble surprised you the most when the credits rolled?
