The Pogues vowed to seek revenge for JJ in the final season of ‘Outer Banks,’ and the last ten episodes deliver a significant amount of bloodshed. With betrayals among the Corsairs and Groff’s escalating conflict with everyone around him, the series finale run does not shy away from collateral damage.

Fans entering this final chapter were already aware of the personal stakes. The Pogues are determined to confront JJ’s father, Groff, who took his own son’s life, and this quest for vengeance drives much of the season’s violence.

Before exploring the deaths in the new episodes, it’s essential to recall the loss that influences everything else. JJ gave the Blue Crown to Groff to protect Kiara, only for Groff to stab him, lamenting that it had come to this between them.

JJ’s last moments were spent with Kiara, and after the Pogues learned of his death, they buried him in Morocco. This loss looms over the entirety of the fifth season and adds emotional depth to Kiara’s storyline.

JJ’s death has resonated with fans for years, feeling particularly tragic given all that the character had endured. Although the Pogues remain united as they head into the finale, they are missing their heart, and that absence influences nearly every choice they make.

The first death of the season occurs in the premiere when Zac betrays fellow smuggler Driss to save himself after Finch places them in a deadly ultimatum where only one can survive.

Things escalate quickly from there. Zac seizes the gun during their struggle and shoots Driss in the chest, killing him instantly, which sets a ruthless tone for Finch’s operation throughout the season.

In episode two, the stakes rise even higher. Dr. Craig, an expert brought in to authenticate the Blue Crown, is revealed to be secretly working for Finch. When she demands payment, Finch has one of his men execute her with a shot to the head.

Later in the season, another duo of hired guns meets a violent end. Julio’s men, Tevi and Roberto, chase John B and Sarah to the docks, but Dalia takes them out with headshots before they can pull the trigger.

Groff’s tumultuous relationship with Rose Cameron becomes one of the more explosive arcs of the season. When Rose attempts to escape with the stolen Royal Merchant gold, Groff catches her, pins her down, and strangles her until Wheezie walks in to find him over what appears to be Rose’s lifeless body.

Wheezie manages to grab a gun and shoots Groff in the arm before fleeing. When Groff returns downstairs, Rose’s body is mysteriously gone, indicating he never completed the job. This brutal near miss sets the stage for Groff’s ultimate downfall.

After killing his own son and attempting to murder Kiara, Rafe, Rose, and Wheezie, Sheriff Shoupe finally arrests Groff for the murders of JJ and Hollis. However, this arrest does not conclude Groff’s story.

Kiara receives the resolution fans have long desired since JJ’s death. During the season’s climactic hurricane, she sneaks aboard the ship Groff is using to escape with the stolen gold and stabs him, igniting a final confrontation between them.

As they fight, Kiara ensnares Groff in the ship’s rigging, hoists him into the air when the mast snaps, and then cuts the rope holding the broken mast, sending Groff down into the tumultuous waters for good. This chaotic end is fitting for the man who tore the Pogues apart.

Despite all the turmoil, the main cast survives the series finale. None of the core characters die in the final season, which is a relief after JJ’s death in the previous season raised concerns about the fate of another beloved Pogue.

Kiara, in particular, faces numerous life-threatening situations. There’s a moment at the end of episode seven that will leave viewers fearing for her life, though her friends always arrive just in time.

Sarah’s storyline is equally tense. At one point, a bounty is placed on her life, and John B even has a nightmare where he finds her dead, alongside a later health scare cliffhanger that the show quickly resolves.

Pope, John B, Rafe, and Cleo also find themselves in precarious situations, but none experience the same level of sustained life-or-death tension that defines Kiara and Sarah’s arcs this season. By the finale, the surviving Pogues finally get to exhale.

With Groff defeated and JJ avenged, the Pogues’ last ride concludes on their own terms. Which of Season 5’s deaths affected you the most, and did Groff’s watery demise provide the justice you were hoping for?
