The ‘Yellowstone’ universe continues to thrive. Even with the original series concluded, Taylor Sheridan’s acclaimed Western franchise is expanding with new narratives, and fans have recently received encouraging news about a long-anticipated project.

The next chapter in the Dutton family saga, titled ‘1944’, has been in development limbo for years. Initially announced alongside another planned ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff, ‘2024’, information about the project has been scarce, leading many fans to speculate whether the series had been quietly cancelled.

However, it seems that is not the case. Veteran TV journalist Matt Webb Mitovich has confirmed that ‘1944’ is still very much alive at Paramount.

In his Inside Line newsletter, Mitovich responded to a fan inquiry regarding the show’s status, stating he was “assured” that the ‘Yellowstone’ prequel “is still in development at Paramount.”

This update follows several shifts within the ‘Yellowstone’ franchise. While earlier plans revolved around various time periods, recent spinoffs have focused more on specific characters. Series like ‘Marshals’ and ‘Dutton Ranch’ have continued the stories of beloved characters from the original series, such as Kayce Dutton, Beth Dutton, and Rip Wheeler.

Previous ‘Yellowstone’ prequels, including ‘1883’ and ‘1923’, delved into significant events in the Dutton family’s history. A potential ‘1944’ series would carry on this tradition by showcasing another generation of the family and shedding light on how the iconic ranch evolved into what it is today.

There are numerous possible directions the show could explore. One popular theory suggests that ‘1944’ could reintroduce Spencer Dutton, portrayed by Brandon Sklenar in ‘1923’. The timeline would also provide an opportunity to delve into John Dutton’s early life and present viewers with another chapter of the family’s legacy.

This project could further broaden the ‘Yellowstone’ universe, similar to how ‘1923’ introduced new characters and elevated Sklenar’s profile.

When ‘1944’ was first revealed, there were indications that the show might connect to a planned modern-day spinoff titled ‘2024’. Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey was rumored to lead that project, but those plans seem to have shifted. Instead, Paramount has opted to proceed with separate character-driven series.

Meanwhile, Taylor Sheridan remains a key creative force behind Paramount’s television offerings. Although he has signed a significant deal with NBCUniversal to develop future films and shows, he is expected to continue his collaboration with Paramount for several more years.

This means ‘1944’ still has the potential to come to fruition. While no release date, cast announcement, or production timeline has been established yet, the latest report gives ‘Yellowstone’ fans a reason to remain hopeful.

After years of anticipation, the Dutton family’s next historical chapter may still be on the horizon. It appears that ‘1944’ is still being considered as a vital part of the ‘Yellowstone’ legacy.
