Final Trailer for Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Released
The final trailer for Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has been unveiled, offering fans another glimpse of one of the most eagerly awaited films of the year.
Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, ‘The Odyssey’ is inspired by Homer’s renowned ancient Greek poem. The narrative follows Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he faces numerous trials on his quest to return home after the Trojan War. Throughout his journey, he encounters perilous creatures, formidable gods, and various life-threatening obstacles while striving to reunite with his wife, Penelope.
Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway portraying Penelope. The film also boasts a star-studded cast including Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. Nolan is producing the film alongside his wife, Emma Thomas, through their production company, Syncopy.
Nolan began crafting the screenplay in March 2024, and by October of that year, Universal Pictures had acquired the project, officially announcing the film in December. Casting continued into early 2025, culminating in Matt Damon being confirmed as the lead actor in February.
For this adaptation, Nolan meticulously examined various translations of Homer’s original text. Instead of modernizing the tale, he aimed for a more authentic representation of Greek mythology. Reports indicate that he drew inspiration from classic films such as ‘Andrei Rublev’ and ‘Ran,’ as well as the visual effects work of the legendary Ray Harryhausen.
Filming took place across multiple countries from February to August 2025, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Western Sahara, and Malta. Some scenes were also filmed at the Universal Studios lot in Los Angeles. This extensive production enabled the filmmakers to capture diverse landscapes that reflect the epic journey across land and sea.
With a reported budget of around $250 million, ‘The Odyssey’ is one of the largest productions in Christopher Nolan’s career. It also marks the first feature film shot entirely using IMAX’s 70 mm film cameras, promising audiences a more immersive experience, particularly on large-format screens.
Prior to its release, the film has sparked considerable online discussion. Fans and critics have engaged in debates regarding the movie’s costume design, production aesthetics, accents, dialogue, and casting decisions. Much of the conversation has centered on how faithfully the film adheres to the historical context and Homer’s original narrative.
The newly released final trailer showcases the film’s grand action sequences, breathtaking locations, and mythical beings, including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the nymph Calypso. It also emphasizes Odysseus’ relentless quest to return to Ithaca after years of absence.
‘The Odyssey’ is set to premiere in London on July 6, 2026, before hitting theaters across the United States and the United Kingdom on July 17 through Universal Pictures. The film will also be available in IMAX and other premium large-format theaters, allowing audiences to experience Nolan’s latest epic on the grandest screens possible.
