First Footage From ‘Digger’ Reveals Tom Cruise’s Most Dramatic Transformation Yet
Tom Cruise has dedicated nearly two decades to crafting his image around thrilling stunts and blockbuster franchises, making his upcoming project with Alejandro G. Iñárritu an unexpected twist in his career. The Oscar-winning director, known for films like ‘Birdman’ and ‘The Revenant’, typically steers clear of action-packed spectacles, which has left fans curious about the nature of their collaboration.
This intrigue intensified when early promotional materials surfaced, showcasing Cruise under heavy age makeup, making him nearly unrecognizable in brief glimpses from the trailer. As the film’s release date approaches, Warner Bros. and Iñárritu have kept the plot details intentionally vague, leaving much of the story enveloped in a striking yet puzzling visual transformation.

The mystery began to unravel this week with the debut of the first actual clip from ‘Digger’ during Cruise’s appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’. The footage features Cruise fully embodying Digger Rockwell, an aging, overweight oil tycoon with graying hair, deep wrinkles, and a noticeable gut, a stark contrast to the action-hero image audiences have come to expect from him.
According to Warner Bros.’ official synopsis, Rockwell is depicted as the most powerful man in the world, thrust into a frantic race to prove he can save humanity after an environmental disaster he caused threatens to annihilate everything. This crisis originates from a catastrophic methane leak linked to a destabilized Greenland glacier, a disaster instigated by his own company’s interference, with the potential to displace millions globally.
Cruise candidly discussed the physical challenges of the role during his Fallon appearance, sharing that the prosthetic application initially took around six hours before he worked with the makeup team to reduce it to under an hour. When Fallon humorously showcased a photo highlighting the character’s prosthetic backside, Cruise quickly interjected with a laugh, asserting, “That’s prosthetic, I can do better than that.”
In addition to the physical transformation, Cruise described a particularly challenging scene in the film featuring a ten-minute monologue shot in a single take, encompassing roughly ten to twelve pages of dialogue. He likened the experience to standing on the edge of a cliff, uncertain of what would unfold next, and recounted Iñárritu’s candid response to his drastic transformation for the role, saying to the director, “You’ve got some cojones, my friend. Let’s go!” as reported by The Tonight Show.
The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde, and Emma D’Arcy, leaning more towards prestige drama than Cruise’s usual collaborators. Warner Bros. has promoted the project as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions,” a tagline that reflects the tonal shifts suggested by the footage released so far.
Beyond the film clip, Cruise’s Fallon appearance evolved into a full promotional spectacle, featuring a boot-shaped popcorn bucket linked to the film’s marketing and a claw machine challenge filled with prizes referencing his past work. This elaborate, stunt-filled promotional strategy indicates that Warner Bros. is positioning ‘Digger’ as a significant theatrical event rather than a subdued awards-season release.
‘Digger’ is scheduled to hit theaters and IMAX screens on October 2, having taken over the release slot originally set for ‘The Batman: Part II’ after that project was postponed to 2027. With the buzz generated by this first real footage and its stark departure from Cruise’s typical on-screen persona, the film seems poised to become one of the most closely monitored theatrical ventures of the fall season.
With just a few weeks left until its release, fans are finally getting a genuine glimpse of what Cruise and Iñárritu have been crafting together. Whether this bold creative risk pays off remains to be seen, but based on this initial clip alone, ‘Digger’ appears to be unlike anything Cruise has attempted in years.
