Middle-earth enthusiasts have spent nearly two years gathering hints about Elijah Wood’s potential return to the iconic role of Frodo Baggins. With ambiguous interview responses, a slip of the tongue from a wizard, and ongoing speculation, fans have felt the confirmation was always just out of reach. Now, it seems the wait for visual evidence is finally over.

A newly released image from the set of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ provides the first authentic look at Frodo, depicted from behind as he approaches the recognizable round green door of Bag End, walking stick in hand and his signature curly hair visible. Directed by Andy Serkis, the film is set to hit theaters on December 17, 2027, giving fans ample time to ponder how this brief yet significant return will weave into the narrative.

The story unfolds during a shadowy period in Middle-earth’s history, situated between Bilbo’s farewell party and the Fellowship’s journey into the Mines of Moria. Producer Philippa Boyens described the project to Empire as “quite an intense story” told from Gollum’s perspective. Given this specific timeframe, Wood’s return as Frodo was always anticipated to be limited, a fact the actor has confirmed.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Wood likened his return to reconnecting with old friends rather than stepping back into a leading role. “It’s sort of like getting the band back together a little bit with that film,” Wood remarked, noting that his role is “relatively small,” but he was excited to be back in New Zealand alongside many familiar faces from the original creative team.

This sentiment aligns with how Wood addressed questions about his return for months prior to the official confirmation. In a conversation with The Sunday Times earlier this year, Wood expressed his deep connection to the role, stating, “I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo as long as I’m alive and able,” as reported by Variety, even while refraining from confirming his casting at that time.

As the film is set years before the events of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring,’ the production has reportedly employed digital de-aging technology to help Wood, now in his forties, convincingly portray a younger version of Frodo. This technical challenge mirrors similar considerations for other returning cast members, including Ian McKellen’s Gandalf. Meanwhile, original Aragorn actor Viggo Mortensen chose not to participate, reportedly due to concerns about matching the character’s younger age, allowing Jamie Dornan to step into the role of Strider instead.

Wood’s return is part of a larger reunion of the franchise’s key creative figures, with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Boyens all producing alongside Serkis, who is both directing and reprising his motion-capture role as Gollum. This continuity has been significant for Wood, who has consistently highlighted the importance of this world to him, regardless of how much screen time his character has.

With this first image confirming what fans have long speculated, excitement for ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ is likely to continue building over the next year. Wood’s emotional connection to the role and the returning creative team behind it make this brief glimpse of Frodo at Bag End a promising indication of what lies ahead.
