A new chapter in the ‘Minecraft’ film universe is officially underway as a sequel is in development. The original movie, which premiered in 2025, quickly ignited discussions about expanding the narrative, especially given the game’s vast world that allows for countless new characters, locations, and adventures.

Behind the scenes, director Jared Hess and his creative team have indicated that many ideas were left out of the first film, with plans to incorporate some of those concepts into the upcoming installment. Production updates have continued into 2026, including a significant casting announcement that has drawn more attention to the project.

Kirsten Dunst has joined the cast as Alex. This news was confirmed in March, with further updates suggesting the sequel will carry the working title ‘A Minecraft Sequel’. According to reports from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros., the film is currently slated for release in July 2027, with Hess returning as director and Chris Galletta co-writing the screenplay.

Dunst also shared the first set photo on Instagram, showcasing her involvement in the project. Along with the image, she captioned it, “It has begun….”

The sequel is being produced by Legendary Pictures, which also supported the first film. Early production notes indicate that the creative team aims to expand the world significantly this time, building on the successful elements of the original while exploring new story directions.

While a full plot synopsis is not yet available, the introduction of Alex suggests that the story will likely delve deeper into survival, exploration, and adventure elements drawn from the game itself. Given the open-ended nature of the ‘Minecraft’ universe, the sequel is expected to introduce new biomes, characters, and challenges that were absent from the first film.
