First ‘Senua’ Trailer Drops: Release Date, Story, and Gameplay Insights
A new game featuring Senua was unveiled during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, marking a significant shift for Ninja Theory. While the character makes her return after “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II,” this new title is not being marketed as a direct sequel. Instead, it expands the series into new gameplay dimensions as a broader action-adventure experience.
Joe Skrebels noted that this project signifies a change in direction for the studio, emphasizing that Ninja Theory is now focused on crafting “new kinds of games,” while still continuing Senua’s narrative. The game builds on the emotional storytelling that fans have come to love, but it introduces more gameplay systems, extensive exploration, and enhanced combat mechanics.
In an interview, Dom Matthews explained that the game is a complete action-adventure experience. The aim is to maintain the strong storytelling and tone of earlier titles while providing players with greater control and interaction. He described it as a way to grant players more freedom in movement, combat, and exploration.
He stated, “This is an out-and-out action-adventure game. It’s a bold new step for Senua, as a character, into the action-adventure space.” He added that the team is building on the successful elements of the series while deepening gameplay complexity and scale.
One of the most significant changes is in combat. The new game introduces more tactical options, allowing players to approach battles in various ways. Players can opt for stealth, direct confrontation, or a combination of strategies based on the situation. Enemies may appear in groups, and combat now features vertical movement, environmental tools, and a broader array of weapons.
Weapons are also more versatile. Senua can acquire weapons from foes or discover them in the environment. Some weapons can be retained, while others are temporary. Players can switch between melee and ranged options, and even combine weapons for unique effects. This system is designed to enhance player freedom in combat scenarios rather than confining them to fixed loadouts.
Traversal has been significantly improved. Movement is now quicker and more fluid, with climbing, vaulting, and jumping playing a larger role. The world features more vertical spaces and interconnected areas. Players can choose to progress swiftly through the narrative or take their time exploring various parts of the environment.
The game world is larger than in previous installments. According to Matthews, the map is approximately twice the size of “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.” However, it is not entirely open world; it retains a linear storyline but is structured in a way that allows players to revisit areas and explore more freely.
Exploration is also more impactful in this game. Hidden details and environmental clues can alter how players interact with the world. Matthews explained that even minor elements in the environment may gain new significance later in the story as Senua’s understanding evolves. This directly ties into the game’s themes of perception and belief.
He emphasized the importance of player observation, noting that even simple objects in the world can become crucial later on. This design connects to the series’ focus on Senua’s mental state and her perception of reality.
The narrative unfolds after both previous ‘Hellblade’ titles. Senua finds herself in a version of purgatory that mirrors her childhood homeland. She is caught between life and death, and her quest centers on achieving peace and reuniting with lost loved ones.
Matthews explained that the game is also designed to be accessible for new players. While returning fans will recognize familiar themes and characters, newcomers will still be able to grasp the story without prior knowledge.
The game introduces Focus Abilities, enabling Senua to alter her interactions with the world. These abilities can be utilized in combat, puzzle-solving, and exploration. One ability showcased in the trailer allows her to “shatter reality,” opening new paths and influencing enemy behavior.
Dom Matthews described this system as part of Senua’s evolving belief system within the story. As she advances, she acquires new abilities that reflect her changing understanding of the world around her.
The interview also confirmed that the game is intentionally not titled “Hellblade III.” Instead, it is simply named “Senua,” reflecting the studio’s ambition to create something fresh rather than a direct continuation of the previous format. Matthews stated that this decision embodies a different creative vision.
Another significant change is the studio’s organization. Ninja Theory has unified its entire team to work on a single project for the first time in over a decade. Matthews explained that this allows for a larger and more cohesive development process, with all 85 developers dedicated to the same game.
He also confirmed that “Project Mara,” a previously announced horror project, has been put on hold to allow the studio to concentrate fully on Senua’s new direction.
The game is slated for release in 2027. It will be available on Xbox Series X and Series S, Xbox on PC, cloud streaming, Steam, and PlayStation 5. It will also launch on Game Pass on day one and support Xbox Play Anywhere, enabling shared progress between console and PC.
Overall, this project signifies a major evolution for Ninja Theory. It retains the emotional storytelling the series is known for while venturing into a more traditional action-adventure framework with deeper combat, broader exploration, and enhanced player freedom.
