First ‘Supergirl’ Reviews Are In – Milly Alcock Shines as the Lead
The initial reactions to ‘Supergirl’ have been released, and the early feedback from film critics has largely been positive. According to comments shared by press members after an early screening, the film offers a unique take on the superhero genre, allowing Milly Alcock to truly shine in her leading role.
This film marks the second installment in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, following the successful release of ‘Superman’ last year. While ‘Superman’ showcased a brighter aspect of the franchise, many critics suggest that ‘Supergirl’ ventures into a grittier and more perilous territory.
Several journalists have likened the film’s aesthetic to the ‘Mad Max’ series. Mike Ryan was among those who pointed out this shift, stating that the film “looks and plays more like a ‘Mad Max’ movie, with dirty worlds, gross villains and a self-destructive hero.” This comparison indicates that viewers can anticipate a tougher and less refined backdrop than typically seen in superhero films.
Milly Alcock’s portrayal of Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, has garnered significant acclaim. Journalist Simon Thompson remarked that Alcock excels in the title role, also praising Jason Momoa’s performance as Lobo. He noted, “It isn’t a classic but it’s fun and hits most of the targets it aims for. Milly Alcock is great as the titular heroine and Momoa’s Lobo is a blast. Other big wins are the action, humor and when it leans into physical production.”
Germain Lussier from Gizmodo and io9 also shared a positive outlook on the film. Although he mentioned it may not achieve the same emotional depth as ‘Superman,’ he still found it enjoyable. Lussier stated, “It doesn’t quite have the resonance of ‘Superman,’ but it acts as both a perfect companion and follow-up to that movie with better characters and more complex relationships. It’s also incredibly emotional, which makes the action hit even harder.”
The film is adapted from Tom King’s comic book series ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ and is helmed by director Craig Gillespie. The narrative follows Kara as she teams up with an unexpected ally on a journey through space after a formidable foe attacks someone dear to her. The storyline intertwines themes of revenge, justice, and personal struggles as Supergirl confronts new obstacles.
In addition to Alcock, the film features Matthias Schoenaerts as the antagonist Krem of the Yellow Hills. Eve Ridley portrays Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young girl seeking Supergirl’s assistance after her father is murdered. The cast also includes David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa as the beloved character Lobo. David Corenswet is anticipated to appear as Superman as well.
In a recent cover story with Variety, Alcock discussed her motivation for taking on such a significant role. She expressed, “I looked at myself in the mirror, and I was like, ‘Who am I to turn down this opportunity? I knew that it was what I needed to do, because it scared me. And I thought, ‘Well, I get one big, bad, beautiful life. Why not fucking go for it?’ Just fucking go for it! What are you, scared? Get over yourself.”
Based on these early reactions from critics and journalists, ‘Supergirl’ seems poised to maintain the positive momentum of James Gunn’s DC Universe when it hits theaters on July 26.
