First Trailer for ‘Pompeii: Out of Time’ Starring Tom Hiddleston Released
National Geographic has unveiled the first teaser for a new documentary-style series centered on the destruction of Pompeii, featuring Marvel actor Tom Hiddleston as the host and narrator.
The series, titled ‘Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston’, is set to premiere on Disney+ and Hulu, as announced by National Geographic. It revisits the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, which obliterated the Roman city of Pompeii, burying it under layers of ash and volcanic debris.
In the teaser trailer, Hiddleston introduces the concept behind the series, emphasizing that storytelling about the past aids in understanding the present. “Human beings have always told stories. We tell stories about the past to understand something about our present,” he states in the opening moments of the preview.
The series aims to explore the well-known disaster from a fresh perspective. While many are familiar with the destruction of Pompeii, Hiddleston highlights that there are lesser-known aspects of the story. A significant theme of the series is that not everyone in Pompeii perished during the eruption; some individuals actually survived, which becomes a focal point of the project.
Hiddleston shares that this realization was what attracted him to the series. “That was the light bulb for me. That’s why I wanted to make this series,” he explains.
‘Pompeii: Out of Time’ blends documentary storytelling with dramatized recreations. The teaser showcases behind-the-scenes footage of actors reenacting scenes set in ancient Pompeii, along with production efforts aimed at recreating the world prior to the eruption. The series appears to follow a structured investigation into the events surrounding the disaster, resembling a historical inquiry.
In the show, Hiddleston assumes the role of a “time detective,” guiding viewers through the timeline of events leading up to and following the eruption. The series is designed to dissect the disaster in detail, examining how people lived moment by moment as the volcano erupted and transformed everything.
Executive producer Kevin R. Wright describes Hiddleston’s role as someone “digging into the past” to uncover hidden survival stories. The show also seeks to connect ancient history with contemporary understanding, illustrating how much of the human experience remains consistent across time.
The teaser concludes with Hiddleston suggesting that the series will challenge viewers’ perceptions of Pompeii. “This will be a new way of telling this story,” he asserts. He adds, “I’ll never think about Pompeii in the same way ever again. I know what the ending is… or do I?”
This project continues Hiddleston’s long-standing collaboration with Disney, where he is best recognized for portraying Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Beyond Marvel, he has appeared in notable works such as ‘The Night Manager’, ‘Kong: Skull Island’, ‘War Horse’, and ‘Crimson Peak’.
While a release date for ‘Pompeii: Out of Time’ has yet to be announced, the teaser indicates that the series will offer a captivating blend of history, storytelling, and dramatization focused on one of the most infamous natural disasters in human history.
