A new South Korean sci-fi monster film is generating buzz after its first teaser trailer was unveiled following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Titled ‘Hope’, the movie boasts a cast that includes both Korean stars and Hollywood actors, such as Michael Fassbender. The teaser, released post-Cannes, indicates that the film is set to debut in Fall.

The trailer begins with dark, deserted streets stained with blood, damaged vehicles, and ruined buildings. Sirens wail in the background as quick cuts showcase horrifying alien creatures attacking a small South Korean town. This footage suggests that the film blends elements of sci-fi, horror, thriller, and monster action rather than adhering to a single genre.

The official synopsis for ‘Hope’ provides further insight into the story. It states:

“In the remote South Korean village of Hope Harbor, police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) are called to find a mysterious creature that has wreaked havoc on the village. In the nearby forest, a coterie of hunters, including Sung-ki (Zo In-sung), set out to track the beast and find themselves hunted instead. But all is not as it seems, and perceptions can be misleading.”

The synopsis continues:

“What begins as ignorance plants the seed of disaster, escalating through human conflict into a tragedy of cosmic proportions.”

Directed and written by Na Hong-jin, this marks his fourth project showcased at the Cannes Film Festival. The cast features Hwang Jung-min, Hoyeon, and Zo In-sung alongside Hollywood talents like Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton, Alicia Vikander, and Michael Fassbender.

Cinematography for the film is managed by Hong Kyung-pyo, with the score composed by Michael Abels.

Early reviews from Cannes have been overwhelmingly positive. Reports indicate that ‘Hope’ received a 7-minute standing ovation after its screening, making it one of the most discussed Korean monster films on the horizon. Fans will finally be able to experience the excitement when the film hits theaters in Fall 2026.
