Florence Pugh’s Cathy Ames Shines in New ‘East of Eden’ Ahead of Netflix Release
Few literary characters have sparked as much debate as Cathy Ames, the mysterious figure at the center of John Steinbeck’s expansive family saga. For decades, readers have argued over whether she is a true monster or something more nuanced. Now, Florence Pugh’s portrayal of Cathy Ames is set to reach a whole new audience.
The story itself isn’t new to film. Elia Kazan’s 1955 adaptation made James Dean a household name, followed by a three-part limited series in 1981. What distinguishes this latest adaptation is its scale, as the Netflix series aims to present the entire novel in a more comprehensive manner.
This brings us to the latest teaser. On September 30, Film Crave shared a new 16-second clip from Netflix featuring Pugh as Cathy Ames in ‘East of Eden’, with the series set to premiere the very next day. The clip offers a quiet, moody close-up that aligns with the intimate tone Netflix has been cultivating for weeks.
The streaming service’s promotional strategy has emphasized this intimacy. Netflix released a video of Pugh reading from Steinbeck’s novel in an ASMR style leading up to the premiere, while a post on X confirmed the October 1 release date.

The release strategy is straightforward. All seven episodes will be available on the premiere day, allowing viewers to choose between savoring the story or binge-watching it over the weekend. The series begins streaming globally on Thursday, October 1.
The narrative spans generations, from the aftermath of the Civil War to the early days of World War I, intertwining Cathy’s journey with the Trask and Hamilton families in California’s Salinas Valley. Cathy’s life becomes intertwined with generations of Trask men, including Adam and Charles, as they navigate the darker aspects of the California dream.
This adaptation allows for a deeper exploration of Cathy’s humanity. Showrunner Zoe Kazan aims to delve into the motivations behind Cathy’s harmful choices, a concept that resonated with Pugh. Kazan has also acknowledged that some fans may be dissatisfied with her interpretation, as no adaptation can perfectly mirror the source material.
Pugh has described the role as one she grappled with throughout filming, expressing a sense of defensiveness and protectiveness over Cathy. She has conveyed that introducing the character to a new generation is a daunting task. This blend of anxiety and commitment suggests a performance rooted in empathy rather than mere villainy.
Kazan has her own connection to this material. Her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film, adding a unique family legacy to the adaptation. Kazan also referenced Steinbeck’s letters about writing the book, published as ‘Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters’, during production.
Pugh is not alone in carrying the series. The cast features Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask, Mike Faist as Charles Trask, Hoon Lee as Lee, Tracy Letts as Cyrus Trask, Martha Plimpton as Faye, Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, Joseph Zada as Cal Trask, and Joe Anders as Aron Trask. Pugh also serves as an executive producer on the series, making her involvement more than just a starring role.
The casting has its own backstory. Reports indicate that Kazan was drawn to Pugh after being impressed by her performance in the horror film ‘Midsommar’. The project has been a long time in the making, with Netflix unveiling the first trailer nearly four years after the limited series was initially announced.
Anticipation has been mounting since the trailer dropped on September 2, with discussions centering around Pugh from the outset. Critics and fans have labeled Cathy as a devil figure and the novel’s main antagonist, while the series appears determined to complicate that characterization.
With the premiere just hours away, the pressing question remains whether this version of ‘East of Eden’ can captivate both devoted Steinbeck enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
