Focus Features Bets on Inde Navarrette for Best Actress Oscar for ‘Obsession’ Performance
Horror films have historically faced challenges in gaining Oscar recognition, with the Academy often viewing the genre as less worthy of the prestige typically reserved for dramas. However, recent years have shown a shift, as wins for movies like ‘Sinners’ and ‘Weapons’ indicate that the Academy’s old biases may be fading.
This change has paved the way for one of this year’s biggest surprise hits to make a serious awards run. ‘Obsession,’ a low-budget horror-romance directed by Curry Barker, has already become the highest-grossing original film of the decade, raking in over $505 million globally on a mere $750,000 production budget.
Now, Focus Features is channeling that box office success into an official awards campaign. Inde Navarrette will campaign for Best Actress for her role in ‘Obsession,’ with the studio planning a comprehensive effort to secure nominations across nearly every eligible category.
Navarrette’s portrayal of Nikki in ‘Obsession’ has received widespread acclaim for its ability to blend terror and empathy, as she embodies a character torn between victimhood and menace due to a magical artifact’s curse. Just six months ago, she was primarily known for a minor role on The CW’s ‘Superman & Lois,’ making this Oscar campaign a remarkable leap in her career.
In addition to Navarrette, Focus Features aims to promote director Curry Barker as a contender for Best Director, Original Screenplay, and Film Editing, mirroring the three-category sweep achieved by Sean Baker with ‘Anora.’ The complete submission list also includes efforts in sound, with mixers YJ Gold and Ben Zarai, as well as makeup and hairstyling led by department head Allie Shehorn.

Navarrette’s placement in the lead actress category, rather than supporting, is a significant strategic decision, as studios often choose a “lesser” category if they believe an actor has better chances there. Given how pivotal her performance is to the film’s success, campaigning her as a lead seems more fitting, despite the increased competition.
What makes this campaign feel credible rather than hopeful is the current landscape of the Best Actress category, which industry experts describe as relatively sparse this awards season. With Julianne Moore’s performance in ‘The Debut’ still largely unseen by voters and few other major contenders generating excitement, Navarrette’s breakout performance arrives at a time when the category genuinely has space for a surprise nominee.
Focus Features has a clear strategy to leverage horror’s recent awards momentum, following the model established by Jordan Peele with ‘Get Out’ in 2017, which competed as a comedy and ultimately garnered four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, along with a win for Best Original Screenplay. Whether ‘Obsession’ will adopt a similar genre-category approach remains to be seen, but the comparison indicates strong confidence from the studio.
With ‘Obsession’ already recognized as one of the year’s most surprising box office successes, this awards campaign offers Navarrette a genuine opportunity to transform a standout horror performance into Oscar recognition.
