Prestige thrillers often struggle to find their footing this late in a first season, but Hulu’s ‘Furious’ seems to be defying expectations as it approaches its finale. What started as a gripping cat-and-mouse chase between an FBI agent and a cunning killer has transformed into a deeply emotional narrative with its penultimate episode.

Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, ‘Furious’ centers on FBI agent Alice Black, who investigates a series of suspicious deaths tied to Catherine, a meticulous woman whose victims are all connected by allegations of abuse and institutional neglect. As the paths of these two women continue to intersect throughout the season, the distinction between justice and revenge becomes increasingly blurred, and Episode 7, titled ‘Some Days It Don’t Come Easy,’ heightens that tension to a breaking point.

The episode begins in the wake of Alice’s accidental overdose, with Catherine having escaped and largely absent from the screen for most of the hour. Marshall is alive but recuperating under his mother’s care, and it is through her harsh, unsympathetic comments that Alice’s own traumatic history starts to unravel, revealing that she fled a group home as a teenager and lost a baby during that time.

Danny spends a significant portion of the episode grappling with a USB drive containing home videos belonging to Jay Easton, footage that implicates Easton in serious crimes against minors. After bringing Alice home and kindly agreeing to her request for him to stay the night, they share a tender morning together, with Alice finally expressing her love for him and her desire to join him at his beach house.

However, that moment of hope is short-lived. Danny is unable to shake off the implications of what he discovered on the flash drive, and when he realizes Alice isn’t merely pushing him away at her lowest point, he reveals the truth: she appears in the footage. Alice doesn’t go into detail, but through a strained conversation with her sister, Amy, it becomes evident that she was only fourteen years old when the footage was recorded, and the man involved was not Jay Easton but another older man associated with him.

Despite possessing concrete evidence that could potentially imprison Easton, Danny ultimately opts not to hand the drive over to the authorities, unwilling to expose Alice’s past to anyone else. Instead, he leaves the USB at her bedside, a decision that may have significant repercussions as the season finale approaches, especially with Ed still desperately searching for the drive and increasingly willing to cover his tracks.

After physically recovering, Alice dedicates the remainder of the episode to pursuing her last lead. She recruits a very inebriated Nora, found mid-karaoke, to help track down Elena at a Bronx motel, where the young woman is being controlled by a trafficker. Following a tense stakeout and brief chase, Alice finally confronts Elena, revealing the truth about her own parentage and Catherine’s role in her abandonment as a baby, hoping this revelation will sever Elena’s loyalty to Catherine.

The gamble pays off. Elena hesitantly calls Catherine’s number, and when it rings from inside the bathroom, she flees while Nora gives chase and Alice faces Catherine directly. Rather than arresting her immediately, Alice makes a bold choice: she allows Catherine to escape, instructing her to head straight to Jay Easton’s house. Initially, it seems Alice is simply permitting Catherine to take revenge on her behalf, but she explains to Nora that the plan is more strategic; by following Catherine and arresting her on Easton’s property, they will have legal grounds to search the house and catch him in the act.

What Alice doesn’t yet realize is just how incriminating that search would have been had she arrived just a bit earlier. Jay Easton, gravely ill and reliant on an oxygen machine, is seen spending time with a young girl named Lacey inside a concealed panic room, with his own daughter, Emma, fully aware of and complicit in his abuse. After Ed warns that police may be on their way with cause to search the property, Easton reveals he still has more incriminating footage hidden away, refusing to part with it even in his final days, despite Emma’s anger and eventual physical confrontation with him.

With Catherine now en route to Easton’s house to finish what she started, evidence of his crimes already circulating, and Danny’s DNA analysis linking skin found under a previous victim’s fingernails to a sibling of Caleb Easton, the episode effectively resolves the season’s central mystery. The only lingering question is whether too many individuals with a vested interest in concealing the truth can keep it buried before the finale forces everything into the open.

As ‘Furious’ wraps up its first season on August 31, Episode 7 leaves nearly every major storyline converging toward a single, high-stakes confrontation.
