George Lucas’ Surprise ‘Minions & Monsters’ Cameo Released and Fans Are Excited
‘Minions & Monsters’ has been showcasing more than just banana humor and chaotic yellow antics in recent weeks. The latest installment in the ‘Despicable Me‘ series takes James and Henry, a fresh duo of Minions, back to Hollywood’s early days, where they inadvertently become movie stars and unleash a horde of monsters. The film embraces its love letter theme, packed with nods to classic Hollywood icons throughout its runtime.
Director Pierre Coffin, who lends his voice to every Minion, co-wrote the screenplay with Brian Lynch. Together, they crafted a sequence centered around a fictional Hollywood movie museum. This museum, guided by Olivia, voiced by Allison Janney, showcases statues that pay homage to cinema’s greatest legends, including tributes to Humphrey Bogart, Orson Welles, and even Keanu Reeves as Neo from ‘The Matrix’.
Within that museum scene lies the film’s biggest surprise: a voice cameo from Star Wars creator George Lucas, portraying a version of himself. Lucas is depicted as a living exhibit trapped in a glass case, pleading with Olivia for his cellphone to call for help, only for her to deny him, pointing out he would only call for help anyway. He makes another appearance in the film’s closing scene, albeit without any additional dialogue.
Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri shared how they secured one of Hollywood’s most private figures for this role. He revealed to Collider that he first met Lucas about two years ago after discovering the director was a big fan of Illumination’s work, particularly the Despicable Me franchise and its Minions.
Meledandri noted that this admiration evolved into a pitch when a character idea emerged during the film’s development. He presented the concept to Coffin, Lynch, and producer Bill Ryan, casually suggesting they could involve George, a notion that was initially met with laughter.
According to Meledandri, Lucas agreed almost instantly when the offer was made. He described this response as a remarkable moment for the studio, adding that Lucas has expressed eagerness to return for a role in the next Minions film.
Lucas recorded his voice for the cameo during a session in Paris, and reports suggest that the same museum scene also features an animated tribute to Orson Welles, a filmmaker Meledandri has admired since his early days in Hollywood. The cameo has quickly become one of the most discussed aspects of the film’s release, with fans and critics noting how fitting it is for a movie so deeply enamored with the history of filmmaking.

Some fans have also linked Lucas’ brief interaction with Olivia back to Star Wars, as her refusal to give him his phone mirrors Princess Leia’s famous cry for help in the original 1977 film. This isn’t Lucas’ first appearance outside his own franchises; he has made cameos in films like Hook, Men in Black, and Beverly Hills Cop III, along with a voice role in a 2007 episode of Robot Chicken.
‘Minions & Monsters’ premiered in theaters on July 1, just in time for the Fourth of July weekend, and has been widely released over the holiday. The film features the voices of Steve Carell, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Trey Parker, Bobby Moynihan, and Phil LaMarr, and currently holds a 91 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
