Since Anthony Bourdain’s passing, his legacy has taken many forms, but few adaptations resonate as deeply as this upcoming project. The graphic novel series that explores a world dominated by chefs is finally being adapted into an animated format, a long-awaited transformation.

‘Get Jiro’ originated as a New York Times bestselling graphic novel co-written by Bourdain and Joel Rose, featuring artwork by Langdon Foss and Alé Garza, first published in 2012. The narrative unfolds in a near-future Los Angeles where master chefs hold the reins of power, and securing a reservation at a top restaurant can lead to deadly consequences.

Adult Swim has unveiled the first trailer for this animated series adaptation, offering fans a glimpse into the ambitious premise. The story centers on Jiro, a vengeful sushi chef who enters a dystopian Los Angeles where patrons often resort to murder to secure coveted dining spots.

Series creator Alessandro Tanaka describes the show’s setting as a fractured blend of Los Angeles and Tokyo, where every human need can be met through virtual technology—except for the experience of enjoying real food. This scarcity has turned chefs into rival crime lords, with culinary factions vying for supremacy throughout the city.

Tanaka explains that Jiro’s arrival disrupts this delicate balance, as he manipulates the city’s powerful food barons against each other to fulfill a personal vendetta. He likens Jiro’s overarching plan to crafting a recipe for a climactic showdown.

The series features a talented voice cast led by Brian Tee as Jiro, alongside Titus Welliver, Alison Pill, Justin Kirk, and Garret Dillahunt. Directed by Rick Morales, the 10-episode season is produced by Warner Bros. Animation, with Tanaka and Brian Gatewood, known for their work on the A24 film ‘Sharper’ and NBC’s ‘Superstore,’ serving as co-showrunners.

Tanaka has also highlighted the show’s visual influences, noting that Bourdain’s passion for cinema has significantly shaped its structure, drawing inspiration from classic samurai and western films. This blend of genres aims to establish a unique identity beyond the shocking premise of culinary violence.

‘Get Jiro’ is set to premiere on Adult Swim on October 3 as part of the network’s Toonami programming block, airing at midnight and available for streaming the following day on HBO Max. Additionally, the show will have a special screening and panel at New York Comic Con on October 10, providing fans with an early opportunity to view footage and engage with the creative team behind the project.

With its mix of dark humor, culinary chaos, and genre-blending visuals, ‘Get Jiro’ is poised to stand out as one of Adult Swim’s most distinctive offerings this fall.
