Gillian Anderson Celebrates ‘The X-Files’ LEGO Set Announcement with Excitement
Nostalgia-driven collectibles have surged in popularity within the toy industry, with adult fans increasingly eager to spend significant amounts reliving their favorite shows and movies, brick by brick. Few franchises boast the kind of dedicated, decades-long fanbase necessary to justify such investments quite like a certain cult classic sci-fi series from the 1990s.
This devotion is precisely what propelled a long-requested project to fruition this week. Fans who have spent years wishing to see their beloved paranormal investigators immortalized in plastic finally received their answer, accompanied by a genuinely special surprise.
LEGO has officially unveiled its new Ideas set based on ‘The X-Files,’ and to commemorate the announcement, Gillian Anderson reprised her role as Dana Scully in a brand new cinematic promotional short. In the mini-film, Anderson is drawn into a mysterious investigation involving a black box that ultimately reveals itself to be filled with LEGO pieces, gradually assembling into the new set right before her eyes.
The 1,478-piece build recreates several of the show’s most iconic locations, anchored by a detailed version of Fox Mulder’s office alongside a forest clearing complete with a hovering UFO. The set includes eight minifigures, featuring Mulder, Scully, Walter Skinner, Mr. X, Alex Krycek, Carl Busch, The Flukeman, and a grey alien, offering longtime fans a deep cut lineup that goes well beyond just the two leads.

Anderson herself appeared almost as thrilled by the announcement as the fans she has entertained for decades. “Seeing myself in minifigure form is both surreal and oddly delightful,” Anderson stated in a comment shared by Variety, expressing that she views the entire set as a brilliant celebration of the series and is eager to display her own tiny Scully figure.

Discussing the project further, Anderson admitted she genuinely doubted it would ever materialize. She told Forbes that she had assumed the concept had quietly faded away over the years, only to be surprised when LEGO confirmed the set was moving forward into full production.

The set’s origins date back over a decade to LEGO’s Ideas platform, where fans propose their own concepts for official consideration. Australian fan designer Brent Waller originally pitched the idea as part of the platform’s 90s Nostalgia Challenge, sharing his own obsession with the show that began when he first discovered it as a child.

Anderson’s connection to the project extends beyond a mere licensing deal. She has discussed the lasting cultural impact of portraying Scully, including the so-called Scully Effect, a documented increase in women pursuing STEM careers attributed to her character’s influence on young viewers throughout the 1990s and beyond.
The LEGO Ideas ‘The X-Files’ set is priced at $199.99 and will be available to LEGO Insiders for early access starting August 1, with general availability following on August 4. Anyone purchasing the main set between August 1 and August 10 will also receive a bonus gift with purchase, a smaller Scully’s Lab set recreating the FBI National Academy classroom, complete with its own Scully minifigure in scrubs and a lab coat.
With adult-focused LEGO Ideas sets proving there is a substantial market for nostalgia-driven collectibles, this latest release feels like a natural progression for a franchise that has maintained its cultural relevance. Between Anderson’s personal enthusiasm and the incredible level of detail incorporated into the build, this might be one of the most fitting tributes ‘The X-Files’ has received in years.
